Pre-Airing Impressions: Spring 2020 Anime Season

Wow, I’m not late this time! …Well, not exactly. I’m a little late because some stuff has started airing, but not a lot of it so… Yay! We made it! Sorta. Kinda.

Anyway, you know what this is, you know what this is all about and you know to expect both terrible opinions and even more terrible jokes about the upcoming Anime season.

So without further delay, let’s get into it!

Note: As usual, I’m not covering movies or specials in this post. This list is going to be long enough without them.

Kaguya-sama: Love is War S2 – This was a series from last year that I saw a lot of praise for, but due to the premise I had no real interest in checking it out. Until about a week ago when I was catching up with the most popular shows of last year and wound up loving the hell out of it. So much so that it may just be my favourite romantic comedy Anime. Ever.

So the timing couldn’t be better for the shows second season to start airing. I’m not sure what to expect story-wise, but given the nature of the series, I could watch these two play romantic mindgames for hundreds of episodes and never get bored of it.

I expect this will be just as good, if not better than Season 1. I look forward to it.

My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU 3 – SNAFU is one of those shows I’ve heard a lot about, but have never actually seen myself and I was pretty surprised to hear it was getting a third season. I haven’t really heard anyone talk about how excited they are for this one, despite how high in the popularity chart it is, which is weird, but apparently a lot of people are looking forward to this one, if the numbers are anything to go by?

So yeah. I haven’t seen the previous two seasons, so I probably won’t be getting around to this one any time soon. But it’s cool to see it’s getting another season.

Sword Art Online: Alicization – War of Underworld 2nd Season – Awwwwww yeah! This is my shit. This is what I’ve been waiting for. The conclusion to both War of Underworld and Alicization as a whole. I’ve already read the novels, so I know what to expect story-wise, but I look forward to seeing it all in Anime form, especially since this far and away the best part of the entire franchise.

This is very likely going to be Anime of the season for me. Maybe even Anime of the year. Definitely Anime of the Summer. Check it out if you get the chance. #SAOAnimeofthesummer.

Tower of God – This is another show that I’m incredibly excited to watch, despite having never read the source material before. I don’t know all that much about it beyond the basic premise, but one of my closest friends Velarix (subscribe to her channel plz) is a huge fan of the Manwha this show is based on and given how similar our tastes are, I have no doubt in my mind that I’m going to love the shit out of this one.

This has the potential to be my Anime of the Year if it lives up to my expectations. I’m very excited to get around to this one.

Food Wars! The Fifth Plate – Another season of Anime, another season of Food Wars! and another post where I get to say “I haven’t seen any of this series, besides the first episode of Season 1!”

I’ll get to it one day. Maybe when the Anime finishes adapting the Manga. I’m sure it’s as good as ever.

Fruits Basket 2nd Season – I really enjoyed what I watched of last years readaptation of Fruits Basket, so to see its continuing to more accurately adapt the original Manga in a second season is really nice.

I look forward to getting around to it eventually.

BNA – The latest show from Trigger, BNA supposedly takes place in a world where humanoid animals exist and follows a high school student who gets turned into a tanuki humanoid. It sounds like the usual, wacky Trigger fare, and I’m sure the visuals will be really nice and the plot will be insanity.

I’ve never been the biggest fan of Trigger, but in spite of that, I do always make an active effort to watch everything they release when it comes out. So I’ll be giving this one a shot. I’m sure the community will love this one though.

Gleipnir – This one both looks and sounds super interesting focusing on a guy who’s been turned into a monster and has lost his humanity, but who still clings to his human identity. This is my kind of thing and is bound to be something I’ll really enjoy.

Kakushigoto – A dad who draws vulgar Manga tries to hide said vulgar Manga from his young daughter in a tale of familial love. Sounds both funny and wholesome.

Yesterday wo Utatte – A college graduate starts working at a convenience store and meets a cute girl with a cute raven. Sounds wholesome.

My Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom! – An 8 year old daughter of a duke bumps her head and remembers her previous life as an otaku, and that she’s been reincarnated inside of an Otome game she used to play every day. With her knowledge of the game, she does what she can to avoid the “bad endings”.

Sounds fucking mental. And it’s an Isekai, so I’ll watch it.

Ascendance of a Bookworm Part 2 – The second half of a series from last year that I never got the chance to watch yet. But I’ve heard it’s pretty great, so it’s nice to see it’s getting more.

Appare-Ranman! – A series taking place in the 19th century that follows a socially awkward engineer and a samurai as they travel through 19th century America. Sounds wild.

The 8th son? Are you kidding me? – A guy falls asleep after work and wakes up in another world in the body of a 6 year old boy, who’s the 8th son of a poor noble. And he has magic. What the fuck? This sounds like an incredibly bizarre and random Isekai. But I’m down with it.

No Guns Life 2nd Season – I heard this was a fun show. Nice to see it’s getting a second season so soon.

Fugou Keiji: Balance:Unlimited – The seasonal detective show. I probably won’t bother.

Tsugu Tsugumomo – Hey, Tsugumono is getting a second season! Nice one! Let’s hope it’s uncensored this time!

Arte – A show about a girl in 16th century Florence who wants to be an artist. Interesting.

Listeners – Takes place in a world where music doesn’t exist and a girl with an audio jack embedded in her body brings about music or something? Weird premise.

Tamayomi – Cute girls play not-so-cute baseball. This one’s already started and I’ve seen a lot of fucking people bitch about this one on Twitter because “muh animation bad”, but the show looks… Fine…? I’m probably going to watch this one just to spite these joyless motherfuckers. It’s a show about cute girls playing fucking baseball.

Jashin-chan Dropkick’ – The second season of a show that I haven’t seen, but that looks like good fun. I’ve only seen one guy talk about this and he’s a cunt who hates everything, so… We’ll see if it’s good. One day.

Shironeko Project: Zero Chronicle – This literally reads like the plot of a JRPG and its aesthetic looks like a fucking Tales game so this is totally something I’m going to watch. I love the look of this.

Wave, Listen to Me! – This one takes place in a radio station. Huh, that’s kind of interesting. I look forward to seeing what this one will do with that premise.

Kingdom 3rd Season – Hahahahahaha. They actually made a third season of the Kingdom Anime? That feels like a really bad call, given how poorly received the first two seasons were by fans of the Manga but… Maybe this one will have better production values and scrap the shitty CGI?

Regardless, I haven’t watched Kingdom yet, though it’s on my list of 40 Terrible Anime I need to watch for that blog series I was meant to finish last year… Whoops!

Princess Connect! Re:Dive – The latest Cygames Anime, this one focuses on a girl who wakes up in an unfamiliar place with no memories and meets other girls who help her unravel some kind of mystery? The description is pretty vague, but the girls look cute as hell.

Yu☆Gi☆Oh!: Sevens – The latest season of Yu-Gi-Oh! and it looks like they’ve gone with another new art style. I’m not sure how the franchise is doing these days, but the fanbase don’t seem to hyped for this one. But… I’m sure it’ll be fun. I hope to catch up to the series at some point so I’ll get to this sometime this decade.

Houkago Teibou Nisshi – Cute girls going cute fishing.

Kitsutsuki Tanteidokoro – A private detective agency investigates a ghost sighting or something.

Gal to Kyouryuu – A gyaru girl befriends a dinosaur and they start living together. What the fuck?!

Bungou to Alchemist: Shinpan no Haguruma – A party of Japanese writers explore “tainted” books to purify them. u wot m8

Shachou, Battle no Jikan Desu! – Based on a Strategy RPG, this follows a group of adventurers that are sent to dungeons to fight monsters and get treasure. Sounds pretty basic, but it could be a fun time.

Ore no Yubi de Midarero.: Heitengo Futarikiri no Salon de… – This looks like a hentai. Girl looks hot. 10/10 would smash.

Major 2nd (TV) 2nd Season – That really rolls off the tongue. “Major 2nd 2nd Season”. I haven’t seen any of Major so… Giving this a miss for now.

Argonavis from BanG Dream! – More BanG Dream! And more shows added to a franchise I haven’t seen any of.

Olympia Kyklos – What the fuck is that poster?! Hey! It’s the fucking vaporwave guy! Macintosh Plus! WHITTTTTT?!

Shadowverse (TV) – I think this is based on a card game video game or something? I remember this being QA Tested at a place I used to work at. I’m sure… Anyway, there’s no synopsis here, so I dunno what else to say.

Komatta Jiisan – Old man makes old womens hearts go aflutter.

Cardfight!! Vanguard Gaiden: If – A new Vanguard Anime that takes place in an alternate universe. As someone who’s recently gotten into the Vanguard Anime series, I’m sure I’ll get around to this one eventually.

BanG Dream! Garupa☆Pico: Oomori – Another BanG Dream! thing.

Gal-gaku.: Hijiri Girls Square Gakuin – Cute girls participate in a cute event where they compete to be “pro stars”.

Kiratto Pri☆chan Season 3 – I haven’t seen the first two seasons.

Tomica Kizuna Gattai: Earth Granner – This sounds like fucking Beyblade.

Watanuki-san Chi to – There was a first season…?

TV Yarou Nanaana: Kaibutsu Kraken wo Oe! – I swear I see these fucking banana cunts every season.

Anoyo no Subete wa, Obake-gumi! – Youkai gag Anime.

Hakushon Daimaou 2020 – The fuck is this?

Duel Masters King – Another Duel Masters show.

And that’s everything. I’m sure. I’m positive. 99% certain. Let me know if I missed anything and I’ll add it here.

This seasons looks a lot more promising than the last one. There are some great looking sequels and a bunch of new adaptations and original shows that are right up my alley. 2020 is looking a lot better than it did 3 months ago.

As always, I look forward to seeing how things go this season and what ends up coming out on top for me.

Expect an overall First Impressions post once the season is fully underway. Keep an eye out for that! I’ll do it this time. I promise… (I don’t actually, because knowing me I won’t keep that promise).

Anyway… Enjoy the season!

What are you looking forward to this season? Let me know down below!

  1. I’m one of the guys who really enjoyed SNAFU, so another season sounds interesting. Otherwise I typically wait for a couple of episodes to be reviewed before I start watching anything. Don’t watch nearly the volume of anime that I used to.
