Introducing: Leth’s Journey Through 40 Terrible Anime Series

Hi all.

So something interesting happened last week, something that I’ve yet to fully share my thoughts on because it’s a part of my upcoming E3 post.

But Banjo got in Super Smash Bros. It actually happened folks. Banjo and Kazooie got a spot in the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate roster, as DLC, due to launch this Autumn.

And because I legitimately thought that this was an impossibility and that it would never happen, I jokingly asked my Twitter followers to recommend me a bunch of terrible Anime and promised that I’d watch them all if Banjo got in Smash.

And so here we are. I now need to watch 40 Anime that are apparently not so great. And I figured I’d make a fun little project out of it by talking about each and every one of these shows, in depth, on the blog! Because if I’m going to put myself through such an ordeal, I might as well get some content out of it too. This’ll be fun!

So here’s the rules of this little challenge I’ve set myself up for:

  • I’m not allowed to pick the order in which I watch the shows. The next show I watch from the list will be determined by a random number generator.
  • I need to watch every single show to completion, regardless of it’s length. No skipping allowed.
  • If the show is multiple seasons, I only need to watch the first season.
  • Regardless of how much, or how little, I have to say about a show, I need to write a blog post for it.
  • I’m not allowed to watch any other shows until I complete this challenge, outside of seasonal premieres because I still want to write Seasonal First Impressions on the blog.

And that’s it really. Simple.

As for the list of shows, here they are:

1. Ousama Game
2. Darling in the FranXX
3. Hundred
4. Nobunagun
5. Koroshiya-san The Hired Gun
6. Koihime Muso
7. Divergence Eve
8. Ingress
9. Kampfer
10. Kingdom
11. Blade and Soul
12. Alice or Alice
13. K Project
14. Garzey’s Wing (Dub)
15. Cat Planet Cuties
16. Wise Man Grandchild
17. Vampire Holmes
18. Shining Hearts
19. Piano no Mori
20. Pastel Memories
21. Gunslinger Stratos
22. Seisen Cerberus
23. Amnesia
24. Neo Yokio
25. Glasslip
26. Master of Marital Hearts
27. Akikan!
28. Golgo 13: The Professional
29. Triage X
30. Girls Bravo
31. Tsui no Sora
32. Baki
33. Testament of the Sister Devil
34. A Sister’s All You Need
35. Dai Shogun: Great Revolution
36. Hidan no Aria
37. Fireworks
38. Diabolik Lovers
39. HandShakers
40. Conception

I haven’t fully seen any of these shows before and while I did watch the premiere for some of the more recent ones back when they first started airing, I’ve forgotten everything by this point. So I honestly have no idea what to expect here.

Will all of these really be terrible? Will there actually be a few hidden gems? Will I find some new favourites? Or am I doomed to suffer the most terrible of fates?

I have no idea, but I’m looking forward to chronicling this wild journey that Banjo, my audience, and myself, have decided to put me through.

First up is Hundred! So stay tuned for my thoughts on that one.

If you want to follow the action more closely as I journey through each of these shows, you can find the live reaction Twitter thread here.

Until then folks!

    1. You’re not alone. I bought it on iTunes, and for some reason, I rewatch it from time to time. I have a backlog a mile long, and I’m sitting there happily waiting for Erica Candle’s next scene.

I have a soft spot for Mei Mei, too.

“Fly though hundreds of bullets, paint the sky bloody red.” Part of my brain starts ripping that line from the OP apart, then the other part of my brain steps in, gives myself a stern glare, and starts humming along.

I swear, there’s something seriously not right with me…

      1. Haha! I have all the songs in my regular playlist… I think there’s a lot of really cool and touching moments, particularly the bath scene where they sit back to back.

Yeah, we’re pretty weird. Also, it’s worth noting that Cat Planet Cuties is on the list too…

  1. I liked K Project a lot and while it definitely went for style over substance there is still quite a fun story there so hopefully you will enjoy it. Ousama Game is just laughably bad, but a number of us enjoyed it for that reason so it will be interesting to see how you take it. I don’t know that I could handle a binge watch of it. That much terrible might be overkill. As for Wise Man’s Grandchild, it’s one of my personal favourites this season (even if objectively it is pretty ordinary to not so good and I realise that a lot of people will think it is pretty terrible).
That said, the last three on your list… I just couldn’t. I’ve watched all three to the end and they are all fighting for top of the list of anime I regret not dropping.

    1. Ousama Game sounds like the kind of edgy schlock I’d be into, but I’ve heard it’s really, really bad. Wise Man also had me interested from the premiere, so I’m looking forward to it!

And oh no! It sounds like I’m going to be in for quite the ride then! I look forward to sharing my thoughts as I make my way through this all!

      1. Ousama Game is terrible and at times completely illogical, plus visually a mess. So yeah, just pretty bad in general. I still enjoyed it but it does belong on a list of terrible anime.

  2. This does sound like a lot of fun and some of those aren’t as bad as some think they are. Still, I will pay attention to this because it sounds like a great journey.

    1. I’m sure it’ll be a journey of highs and lows! I’ve been meaning to check out a lot of these for a long time, so I guess I have a reason to now.

Thanks for tuning in. Hopefully I can get some good stuff out for this!

  3. This is hilarious Leth, I’m loving it. I barely know any anime on this list (aside from Neo Yokio, which is good, actually), but I’m certain one of these will somehow land in your favorites list. Looking forward to it.

    1. I’m surprised Chargeman Ken wasn’t suggested. It’s pretty (in)famous that it’s a common source used in those MAD remixes. A simple search on Youtube and you’ll see these MADs in the top search results. Discotek has even licensed it and uploaded it in its entirety on Youtube. Lucky for you each episode is only six minutes long if you are to watch it.

Regarding Tsui no Sora. Are you going to watch it censored or uncensored?

  4. Neo Yokio is sooo good though, especially with the follow up Pink Christmas special! Yes, it’s a memey disaster but the that’s the point: take it as a satire of American ultra-rich consumer capitalism and all the pieces fall together. Or, just enjoy it for the Toblerone jokes…

  5. I rather enjoyed the first 2/3 of DarliFranxxx.
Sister New Devil first season was fun.
A Sister’s All You Need – didn’t care for first episode but it gets better and becomes good.
I thought Piano no Mori was really quite good.

Just my opinion. I don’t see Boku no Pico anywhere….

  6. As I said on Twitter: MWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!! I look forward to this challenge with great enthusiasm haha. Koihime Musō was one of the first anime I saw before I even knew what anime was. Oh man… I take full responsibility if you hate it (more so if you hate it, lol). Enjoy the party, Leth. 😉

  7. Oh wow… this is quite the project you’ve got going on! This sounds really exciting! & I hope it’s exciting for you as well, hahaha… I look forward to all your reviews on these shows.

  8. There are some on your list, like Cat Planet Cuties, that I seriously enjoyed. I mean, you’d with a title like that it’d be annoying as all get out, but when the main character talks about the rules of her people disallowing her to accept the title of deity, there’s more going on there than cute cat tails.

I even enjoyed Testament of the Sister Devil and Girls Bravo.

However. If you can watch more than 10 minutes of Handshakers, you’ll do more than I could. I got 2 minutes in and experience actual and honest physical pain. No lie. That anime hurt me.

And as you can probably tell, I try to like almost anything.

Good luck! I hope that you enjoy the project.
