Disclaimer: This post is about a hentai series because I was stupid and didn’t check what each show on the list of shows I said I’d watch for this challenge actually was. Therefore, if hentai is something that makes you uncomfortable, I suggest giving this one a miss.
Well, it finally happened folks. It took 3 shows into this challenge for it to happen, but we finally have ourselves a show that’s actually really bad.
In fact, it’s not just “bad”. It’s awful. It’s atrocious. In fact, it’s probably the worst piece of animation I’ve ever had the displeasure of experiencing. And I’ve seen the likes of Boku no Pico and Mars of Destruction!
So let’s start by addressing what you’ve probably already learned about this show after you no doubt immediately Googled it upon seeing the title in the post: This is a single episode OVA and it’s a hentai. So consider this the first (and hopefully last) ever hentai related post on the blog. This is what I get for not actually checking the shows that were recommended to me before putting them into a list and posting the challenge for all to see. So… I have no one but myself to blame. And Banjo. Fuck you Banjo. And Kazooie. Stupid fucking bird.
…So I’m not exactly a stranger to hentai. Shocker I know! I’ve seen my fair share of it over the years. That should come as no surprise to anyone who’s unfortunate enough to follow me on Twitter (sorry). So I already knew going into this that as an actual Anime series Tsui no Sora wasn’t going to be anything special. After all, it’s hentai. It’s porn. It’s not exactly made to tell an engrossing story or anything. Even the more narrative heavy hentai series out there, like Bible Black and Euphoria aren’t anything I’d consider amazing in terms of storytelling.
But even by hentai standards, Tsui no Sora is completely awful. To the point that it’s probably the worst Anime I’ve ever watched to completion. …Not that that’s anything to brag about, given that the show is only a single episode, but honestly it’s that bad. In fact, getting through this single episode was a challenge in it’s own right because it was basically unwatchable for the most part.
I’m the kind of guy who always tries to see the good in something no matter how bad it is. Because I don’t like being negative. I try to be positive whenever I can, because I believe that focusing on the positive aspects of something is ultimately more valuable than negatively criticising it to ridiculous lengths. It’s why I tend to talk about shows that I like most of the time and why I’ve more or less stopped compiling “worst” lists at the end of each season, among other things.
Even this challenge, which has me tackling shows that were specifically recommended to me due to how “bad” they supposedly are, has tried to remain mostly positive, with the hope that I’ll end up uncovering some hidden gems or be able to give a more positive perspective on something that doesn’t get enough love from the general consensus.
But even I can’t find a single redeeming quality in Tsui no Sora. Because as both an Anime series and a hentai, it fails on every conceivable level.
So what’s this OVA even about? It’s basically about a suicidal girl who’s ready to jump off a roof to end her life, only to be approached by a guy who tells her he can give her a reason to live. And then he has sex with her. And then she just decides to kill herself anyway. The guy then goes around forcing himself on other girls.
And that’s it. That’s the story. Do I even need to critique this?
Look, I love me some edgy shit. Most of my favourite Anime and Manga series are as grim dark as can be, like Berserk, Magical Girl Site and Oyasumi Punpun. But even I felt a little uneasy and kind of disturbed after watching this. And this is supposed to be porn! What the fuck?!
And while we’re on that topic, as a hentai, the series doesn’t exactly deliver either. Putting the fucked up narrative to the side, the shows presentation is ugly as sin. The entire show looks like it was drawn and animated by a 6 year old in Adobe Flash. Everything is disturbingly off model and horrible looking and the animation is practically non-existent. It’s more of a slideshow than an Anime. In a genre where the visuals are supposed to be the main, and oftentimes are the only, appeal this is just… So bizarre. And to make matters worse, the censorship is so fucking prominent that it pretty much takes up half the screen for like the majority of the show. I’m not sure if an uncensored version exists, but I couldn’t find one and I really don’t fancy spending time looking for it because I’ve seen enough of this shit to last me a lifetime. So yeah, I hope you like pixels, because it’s most of the show!
And… What else can I really say here? It’s an edgy hentai OVA with a single episode that looks like shit, sounds like shit and is shit. I thought I’d already seen the worst Anime had to offer but I guess I was wrong. Tsui no Sora is the worst Anime I’ve ever seen and I’m pretty confident that no matter how bad anything else I still have to watch for this challenge is, that none of them will come even remotely close to being as bad as this.
So yeah. There you go. My first, and hopefully only, hentai review on the blog. And the first truly “bad” show of this challenge. I’m sorry if there wasn’t a lot to say this time around but… It’s one episode of porn. There’s not a lot I can say here!
As for what’s next? Well, next up is Kenja no Mago, a show from earlier this year that I absolutely cannot wait to write about! I’ve already finished it and I have a lot to say about it. And I can assure you, it’s going to be a more positive post than this one. In fact, you may be surprised by what I have to say for this one!
If you want to follow the action more closely as I journey through each of these shows, you can find the live reaction Twitter thread here. You can also find a description of this challenge, and a list of all the shows, here.
And you can find my final score for Tsui no Sora and every other Anime I’ve watched on my horrendously incomplete MyAnimeList page.
