Pre-Airing Impressions: Summer 2019 Anime Season

The Summer Anime Season of this is just round the corner, so you know the drill. It’s time for me to give my Pre-Airing thoughts on the upcoming season before things get fully underway.

And wow, for once I’m not late with this! That’s a nice change!

Note: I’m changing things up a bit this time and I’m actually going to talk about some movies and OVAs this time around too. Because unlike most seasons, this one has a lot of notable ones that I feel are worth briefly mentioning. I won’t be covering all of them though because this list would be far too long if I did.

Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls In a Dungeon? Season 2 – Wow, I genuinely forgot that this was ever happening. What’s it been? 4 years since the first season of Danmachi aired? That’s kind of frightening to me. Time really does fly by.

I’ve been wanting a second season of Danmachi for years because, unsurprisingly, I really enjoyed the first season. While it’s not an isekai, it does borrow a lot of elements and storytelling techniques from the genre which are integrated into the series’ worldbuilding spectacularly. And the development of the main character Bell is handled excellently. Do I even need to remind you all of the incredible fight with the minotaur at the series’ midway point?

I haven’t read the original Light Novels for Danmachi, so I’m really not so sure where the story goes beyond the first season, but I’m very excited to see what this new season has to offer. Danmachi is a series I enjoyed a heck of a lot, and I’m sure I’ll have some good fun with this one too.

Dr. Stone – Finally! After a pretty lengthy wait, we’re finally getting an Anime adaptation of Dr. Stone!

For those not in the know, Dr. Stone is yet another Shonen Jump series and the Manga is one of the best stories currently being serialised in the magazine. Like The Promised Neverland that aired during Winter this year, I strongly recommend you go into this one completely blind without reading any kind of plot synopsis. Trust me on this one, the opening of the story is much more impactful and mind blowing if you go in without knowing anything.

And that’s all I can really say about the series without spoiling anything. Dr. Stone is a fantastic Manga, and I really hope that this Anime adaptation does the series justice. It’s being animated by TMS Entertainment, who did excellent work on D. Gray Man in the past, and the episode count is currently unknown, so it may be an ongoing series for some time.

Really looking forward to this one. It’ll probably be one of my top picks of the season.

Arifureta: From Commonplace to World’s Strongest – I know absolutely nothing about this one, but it sounds like yet another fun twist on the isekai genre. A guy and his classmates get transferred to another world and are all granted unique powers, but he gets stuck with being a blacksmith who can only transmute stuff?

I’m not sure how this will play out, but it sounds like they could make something really cool out of this premise. We’ll see!

Vinland Saga – This really is looking like a season where I’m getting some of my most wanted Anime adaptations all at once. I still can’t believe we’re getting an Anime for Vinland SagaAnd it’s being animated by Wit Studio! I can’t think of a better studio to handle this adaptation in all honestly.

In the vast world of Manga, Vinland Saga is pretty much a second Berserk in both its visual presentation and storytelling, and it’s one of the greatest Manga ever released in my opinion. It’s a gritty story set during the time of the vikings and it’s an excellent character driven narrative that rivals the best Dark Fantasy stories out there.

I just hope that this adaptation does the source material justice. Like Berserk, the artwork of Vinland Saga is incredibly detailed and polished and I imagine it will be incredibly difficult to animate. But with Wit taking the helm, I’m pretty optimistic that we won’t get another Berserk (2016) debacle.

If this gets adapted properly, this could genuinely end up being my Anime of the Year. Very excited for this one.

Fire Force – And lookie here, another adaptation that I’ve been wanting for a long time. Fire Force is Shounen series created by Atsushi Ohkubo, the Mangaka for Soul Eater. And as a successor to Soul Eater it’s a fantastic little series loaded with creative ideas and excellent worldbuilding.

It focuses on superpowered fire fighters who battle against humans that suddenly combust and turn into creatures called “Infernals”. It’s a bit of a silly concept, but it’s pretty awesome in execution.

From the trailers I’ve seen, it also looks like the expressive artwork from the original Manga is going to be kept well intact, and the animation looks absolutely spectacular. David Production really seem to be giving it their all with this one.

I highly recommend checking this one out, it’s a great Shounen series that deserves a lot more love.

A Certain Scientific Accelerator – I actually had no idea that this adaptation was coming this soon, but I’m pretty damn hyped!

A Certain Scientific Accelerator is a spin-off series of A Certain Magical Index that follows the fan favourite character Accelerator, and it’s a great spin-off that’s arguably the best part of the entire Index franchise. Accelerator has always been one of the series’ more interesting characters and this series does a great job at exemplifying why that is.

I’m not sure how much of the source material this adaptation is going to adapt, but I guarantee that this is one to check out.

Skilled Teaser Takagi-san 2nd Season – I didn’t watch the first season of this show, but I’ve heard good things about it. I’ll check it out if I ever get around to watching the first.

Lord El-Melloi II Case Files: Rail Zeppelin Grace Note – Apparently this is Fate/Zero spin-off focusing on Waver Velvet after the events of the series. As you all know, I’ve never been a big fan of the Fate franchise, and Zero while an overall better part of the timeline, is no different. But Waver Velvet has always been a character I’ve really liked and is far and away one of the more interesting members of the Zero’s cast.

I’m very curious to see where he ended up after the events of Zero, so… I’m actually kind of excited for this one. Just a little.

Let’s hope it doesn’t fall victim to the usual issues that Fate often does.

Isekai Cheat Magician – The title alone makes this sound like something I’m no doubt going to love. It’s an isekai story about two kids who end up in another world and are granted super strong magical powers which they use to cheat their way through everything as magicians or something?

It sounds like a fun time!

Do You Like Your Mom? Her Normal Attack is Two Attacks at Full Power, Okaasan online – That’s a very… Interesting and wordy title…

A boy and his mother get sent to another world. I’m kind of surprised I haven’t seen this, or even thought of this, idea until now. It sounds like this could be hilarious, but also kind of wholesome.

Looking forward to it.

How Many Kilograms are the Dumbbells You Lift? – Cute girls lifting cute weights at the cute gym to become cute muscly girls. Given my sudden change in lifestyle to one of fitness, I might appreciate this more than usual.

Will you please like hentai if it’s cute? – A guy receives an anonymous love letter that also happens to come with a pair of underwear. He then goes on a quest to find out who the anonymous sender is.

Sounds kind of hilarious if I’m honest, if a little trashy.

Maou-sama, Retry! – A guy gets sent to another world as a demon lord with the twist being that he’s a working adult instead of a teenager. Not too sure how much this will change things up, but it’s an isekai so… You know me.

Magical Sempai – A cute girl being a cute magician with stage fright. The main girl looks hell of a cute, so I’ll probably watch the show for her alone. Don’t mind me.

Bem – Humanoid Youkai protect the innocent from evil Youkai while being shunned by both human and Youkai alike. Sounds like this could be quite the drama filled story with cool action scenes. I’m down with this.

Nakanohito Genome [Jikkyouchuu] – A bunch of gamers get sent to a game world where they have to complete a series of challenging games to make it back home to the real world.

We’re really getting a lot of gaming Anime this season aren’t we?

If It’s for My Daughter, I’d Even Defeat a Demon Lord, Uchi no Musume no Tame naraba, Ore wa Moshikashitara Maou mo Taoseru kamo Shirenai – I think this might be the longest title I’ve ever seen for an Anime in my life. That’s mental!

Anyway, this one is about an experienced adventurer taking in a cute, injured demon girl and becoming her adoptive father. Sounds cute. I think I’ll like this a lot.

Kanata no Astra – Camping in spaaaaaaace!

Araburu Kisetsu no Otome-domo yo. – Cute girls talking about and exploring not-so-cute sex? Maybe?

Given – Seems like a Yaoi take on the guys start a band together type of series. Not my kind of thing really.

Ensemble Stars! – Another one of those idol boys shows set in a school with the twist being that the main character is a female transfer student. I might give this one a look.

Cop Craft – A crime series focusing on the police force in a world where monsters and magical creatures from a parallel world have crossed over into the human world and learned to co-exist with the humans. Could be fun in a Kekkai Sensen kind of way.

To the Abandoned Sacred Beasts – Seems to be a North and South civil war kind of series, only with magic, super soldiers and sacred beasts. It’s by MAPPA, so it’ll probably be a good time.

Are You Lost? – Cute girls stranded on a not-so-cute deserted island. They really keep coming up with crazy ideas here.

Senki Zesshou Symphogear XV – It’s the 1000000000000002nd (5th) season of Symphogear and given that I haven’t seen a single episode of any of the previous seasons, I probably won’t be watching this any time soon.

Granbelm – The synopsis for this one doesn’t have an awful lot of details, but it’s apparently set in a world where magic once existed, but it was lost long ago. That’s the only details I can find on this one. The artwork looks really nice though and I’m sure it’ll be a story about magic users or something so… I’ll give it a look.

Wasteful Days of High School Girl – I feel like I’ve seen this title somewhere before, but I’ve never read the source material before. But I’m sure I’ve seen this before… It sounds so familiar…

Anyway, this is apparently just a high school show focusing on a group of friends. That’s it. Nothing necessarily bad, but the cast would have to be super interesting for this to stand out.

Kochouki: Wakaki Nobunaga – Another Anime about Oda Nobunaga. Anime really can’t seem to get enough of the guy.

Try Knights – A Josei show about rubgy it seems. I’m not a big sports guy, so I’ll probably give this one a miss.

Machikado Mazoku – A show about a devil girl and magical girl. The character designs look really cute, so I’ll watch it.

Starmyu 3rd Season – I didn’t watch the first two seasons.

Yami Shibai 7 – More Yami Shibai! Nice one. I’m a little bit behind on this series, but it’s a pretty fun horror anthology series.

Re:Stage! Dream Days♪ – Another idol show. The girls look cute I guess.

Yubisaki kara no Honki no Netsujou: Osananajimi wa Shouboushi – Muscly Firefighter Men: The Anime.

SD Gundam World: Sangoku Souketsuden – A new Gundam thing. Kinda shocked this is so low down on the list popularity wise.

Business Fish – That poster is terrifying. A fish-headed business man in a suit. That’s the stuff of nightmares.

Waresho! Warera! Shodobutsu Aigo Iinkai – Three girls from another planet come to Earth to save mistreated animals. I can get behind this.

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime OVA – An OVA for the series and judging from the poster, it’s going to be very fan-service heavy. YAY.

Mob Psycho 100: The Spirits and Such Consultation Office’s First Company Outing – A Healing Trip That Warms the Heart – I’m not sure if this OVA is going to be a continuation of the second season, but I’m hoping we get a final season announced after this. Regardless, Mob Psycho 100 is a fantastic series, and more of it, in any form, is a win in my book.

Konosuba: The Movie – The movie for Konosuba is finally coming out and hopefully there’ll be a third season announced at the end of it. That seems to be the tradition nowadays. And if not, a Konosuba movie will be great anyway.

Violet Evergarden Gaiden: Eien to Jidou Shuki Ningyou – The Violet Evergarden movie. It exists, I guess.

One Piece Movie 14: Stampede – Another One Piece movie. The One Piece movies are always a great time, with Strong World being a top tier Anime film, so I’m sure it’ll be a good time.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes: The New Thesis – Stellar War Part 1 – So this is a movie for the remake of Legend of the Galactic Heroes, but I’m not sure if this is a continuation of the TV series or if it’s just a recap movie…

Ni no Kuni – A movie adaptation of the game I haven’t played yet. Cool.

And that’s everything. I’m sure. I’m positive. 99% certain. Let me know if I missed anything and I’ll add it here.

This season looks like it’ll be the best season I’ve had in years. So many adaptations I’ve been wanting to happen for the longest time are actually happening! And there are a ton of other shows that also look fantastic on top of all of those too. Summer is looking to be the season and I don’t think I’m ready for the sheer amount of awesome shows we’re going to be getting. But again, anything can happen. Maybe I’m too optimistic? Who knows!

As always, I look forward to seeing how things go this season and what ends up coming out on top for me.

And stay tuned for some First Impressions posts for any of the shows I decide to write about. I don’t really do these any more, but I might give it a shot again if I have time. We’ll see.

Regardless, an overall First Impressions post will be out once the season is fully underway. I said that last time and then went on hiatus, but I promise I’ll do one this time so… Keep an eye out for that!

And enjoy the season when it comes!

What are you looking forward to this season? Let me know down below!

  1. I am SO beyond ready for Vinland Saga, it’s a bit outrageous haha. I’ve never heard of Dr Stone, but along with Fire Force are the trio that I’m most eager for during the summer.

    1. I’ve been waiting SOOOO long for Vinland Saga! I hope it lives up to the Manga! ><

Dr. Stone is very good and unique! It has some good plot twists and the world is very interesting. Fire Force is also great, it has that Soul Eater charm to it.

      Enjoy the season!

  2. A Certain Scientific Accelerator – I enjoyed that even more than Index. Which to be truthful, got bizarre for a while.

If It’s for My Daughter… – As a daddy that is my personal favorite. Because it is true.

Violet Evergarden Garden Movie – Yes! Yes! Yes!!! Ditto for the Konsuba movie.

Do You Like Your Mom? – Could be interesting. There is a possibility here as long as the writers don’t blow it off. I have always liked older women.

  3. It’s nice to see someone not being a constant hater when it comes to Isekai for a change. I became a fan of the Genre because of Smartphone, so basically right it became popular to call it a played out cliche.

I’m interested in Accelerator, but I doubt it can be Rialgun, that show is the heart of what I love Raildex for.

    1. I absolutely adore isekai. Sure, the genre is a bit oversaturated, but that’s not really an issue in and of itself if the shows themselves are still entertaining.

I still need to watch Railgun. I need to get on that!
