Pre-Airing Impressions: Winter 2019 Anime Season

2018 has came and went, and with 2019 now well under way, we’ve entered yet another exciting year of brand new Anime series, with the first of four seasons; Winter, kicking things off.

I’m a little late to this one, given that some of these have already started airing, but New Year festivities and starting back at work unfortunately had me a little swamped. Hopefully you’ll forgive this one in being a little later than usual.

So anyway as usual, and without further delay, here’s my Pre-Airing thoughts on the upcoming season. Let’s dive in!

Note: As usual, I’m not covering movies or specials in this post. There’s a couple of OVA’s being listed this time around, but most of those also won’t be included. This list is going to be long enough without them.

Mob Psycho 100 II – I actually had no fucking idea that this show was airing this year let alone this season, so I was pretty damn surprised to see at right at the top of the list. And boy, what a series it’s likely going to be.

I’ll be honest, I was never a big fan of One Punch Man. It’s central joke got very exhausting midway through the first episode, and no amount of flashy, over the top animation could do anything to save it’s pretty mediocre and unengaging plot. But it’s younger brother, Mob Psycho 100 turned out to be a pleasant surprise for me, because it took the central idea of One Punch Man: an overpowered protagonist who lives a mundane existence, but possesses out of control powers, and applied it to a story with actual stakes and well written and developed characters, while also still managing to be funny and well animated.

I’m really excited to see where this second season takes things and I can’t wait to see how it all goes down. This is going to be amazing.

The Rising of the Shield Hero – Oh boy, oh boy! Another generic isekai guyzzzz! And this one also has controversial topics in it so it’s so bad and is going to be the worst show of the season!

It’s probably of no surprise to any of you at this point that I’m kind of championing Shield Hero already. Not only because I’ve defended the show on Twitter, but because it’s an isekai and because it has some edgy stuff in it.

The show has already started airing, and of course critics and Anime fans alike are already making big, bold, generalising statements about a controversy that, unlike the ones associated with Goblin Slayer and Magical Girl Site from last year, doesn’t even really exist. There’s some complaints about “slavery” and a false rape accusation, but there’s a reason for these elements being present in the story beyond “the author is a raging, nerdy, male otaku who is angry at the world”. Honestly, if these folks actually did some research into why isekai Anime is commonly associated with these themes, you would maybe choose your criticisms more carefully. …But that’s a topic I don’t want to get into today.

As for the show itself, the thing that matters, as I said before, I’m a fan. I’ve been reading the source material for years at this point, and it’s one of the best written and more unique isekai series out there. I am a little disappointed that Kinema Citrus’ handling of the visuals and presentation based on what little we’ve been shown so far, but if the story itself is kept intact, it should be one of the best shows of the season.

Ignore the dumb controversy and keep an eye on this one.

Kakegurui ×× – Kakegurui was one of the best shows of 2017, and I’m very happy to see that it’s been renewed for a second season. It’s a series full of creative scenarios and a fantastically insane cast of characters and I’m very interested in seeing how this second season plays out, especially since Season 1 ended with an episode that wasn’t in the original Manga, which originally left the future of the series a bit more “up in the air”.

It’s entirely possible that they’ll just continue adapting the Manga with this new season, which I hope is the case, but anything could happen here. Regardless, it’s good to have crazy, gambling waifu’s back.

The Promised Neverland – Oh man, I’ve been waiting for this one for ages and it’s finally here!

The Promised Neverland is the latest Shonen Jump series to get an Anime adaptation, but for a Jump title it’s incredibly unique and stands out a lot from it’s peers by focusing a lot more heavily on world building, the psychology of its characters and a captivating, drama driven plot as opposed to power ups and cool looking fights.

I don’t want to say too much about this one, as the series and what it’s really about are best left completely unspoiled, but trust me when I say that this is a good one. A very good one, and it has the potential to be the best Anime of the season if it’s adapted well, even if it’s only going to be 12 episodes. A second season is more than likely I imagine.

And I strongly advise you go into this one completely spoiler free. Don’t read a MAL synopsis, don’t watch any trailers and don’t even Google it. Just give it a watch when it airs. It’ll be worth keeping a surprise, I promise you.

Date A Live III – Yet another sequel to another one of my favourite shows in recent years, I also completely forgot that this was coming out this season, and I’m very excited to see where the story of Date A Live will go from here.

It’s far from the best written story in the world, and much of its plot is just an excuse to get a bunch of hot Anime chicks with magical powers and big weapons to fight each other. But as a spectacle series with appealing characters designs, some well placed fan-service and heartwarming and charming character interactions, Date A Live knows full well what it is and doesn’t try to be anything else. I can’t wait for this one.

And more Kurumi please!

Boogiepop Never Laughs (2019) – I’ve never seen the original Boogiepop Anime series, nor have I ever read the original Light Novels, but I’ve heard of them more times than I can count and I’m definitely interested in checking this new series out on the name alone.

I have no idea if this is a remake, a readaptation, or a sequel, but regardless I’m looking forward to giving this one a shot and seeing what all the fuss is about.

Dororo – Damn, this one sounds super interesting and is bound to be full of cool action scenes if nothing else. A samurai hunts down a bunch of demons while on a quest for revenge against his father who sold his organs to said demons? And it’s by MAPPA? Sign me the hell up!

Kaguya-sama: Love is War – I really like the sound of this one: a couple of best friends for life develop feelings for each other after spending so much time together as friends, but neither of them is willing to confess. This could either go down the wacky comedy route, or go for a more serious approach. I’m personally hoping for a blend of the two. Either way, this looks like it’s going to be an interesting one!

Manaria Friends – Holy shit! This show is finally coming out after like what? 4 years after it was announced and then suddenly never heard from again for some reason? I actually can’t believe this show is still a thing, let alone that it’s coming out this season.

I was a big fan of Rage of Bahamut: Genesis back when it aired in 2014, and it was one of my favourite shows of that year, and although this is a mostly unrelated, and probably more lighthearted, spin-off series, I remember looking forward to this one back when it was first announced. I wonder if it’ll be as exciting now that it’s finally out? Time will tell I guess.

Domestic no Kanojo – Oh boy, if people think Shield Hero is bad, wait until they get a load of this one. You see, Domestic no Kanojo is a series that actually will have a controversy surrounding it because there’s actually something “immoral” in this story: a love triangle between a student, his female teacher and another female student, complete with graphic and uncensored sex scenes and some insight into the dark and lustful mental state that comes with the characters of such a story.

Basically, it’s a darker, more graphic version of Scum’s Wish and it’s one of my favourite Manga. Surprise, surprise, eh?

I have a strong feeling that the Anime is going to tone down these scenes because TV broadcast, but we’ll see.

Revisions – Ohhhh? An original Mecha Anime series from Shirogumi of all people. The Mecha genre has been very absent in past year, so I’m looking forward to seeing if this one is more Planet With or Darling in the FranXX.

Gotoubun no Hanayome – A guy is tasked with helping 5 cute sisters study and there will probably be lots of romantic and comedy shenanigans during this. Seems fun.

3D Kanojo: Real Girl 2nd Season – I never watched past the first episode of the first season of 3D Kanojo: Real Girl, but I didn’t dislike it. …Or like it much either. It was very “meh”. If I ever finish the first season, I’ll get around to this one too.

How clumsy you are, Miss Ueno. – Cute girl inventing cute inventions. For romance, not science. Sounds cute.

Magical Girl Spec-Ops Asuka – My real life friend who often recommends me Manga, and who recommended Goblin Slayer to me last year, is a big fan of the original Manga for this series and assures me it’s very good, edgy and entertaining. I tend to trust his taste, so I’m looking forward to this one.

Fukigen na Mononokean Tsuzuki – This is supposedly a second season? I’ve never heard of this before… I think…?

Egao no Daika – This one sounds pretty interesting and seems like it’ll have some kind of military or political focus? I’m not usually one for these kinds of series, but I’ll give it a go since the premise sounds so interesting.

Doukyonin wa Hiza, Tokidoki, Atama no Ue. – An aspiring novelist has a stray cat move into his home. I love cats and I’m sure my own cat will enjoy watching this with me. Also, this has 8/10 average on MAL. WHAT.

Watashi ni Tenshi ga Maiorita! – Sounds like a cute Yuri series. I’ll give this a watch for sure.

Grimms Notes The Animation – Damn, this one sounds cool as hell. A world where everyone’s destiny is pre-determined by their own personal “Book of Fate”, but there are bad guys who can alter other people’s books and fuck up their destiny? And then some heroes need to step in and beat the evil book guys?

This sounds pretty silly, but could work really well if done right. I’m hyped for this one!

Piano no Mori (TV) 2nd Season – I never watched this first season of Piano no Mori, but I heard some very positive things about it. I need to get on that…

W’z – Apparently this is actually a sequel to Hand Shakers of all things. Y’know, that GoHands show that literally gave people migraines due to it’s incredibly bizarre visuals and animation?

Well, apparently it’s back, with a second season under the title of W’z and honestly? I’m interested. I never got around to finishing Hand Shakers because I was told it was terrible and I didn’t fancy destroying what little brain cells I have through 12 episodes of headache inducing visuals, but a couple of people who’s opinions I really trust have actually informed me that Hand Shakers was “okay” and that the hate was overblown so… Maybe I’ll watch it. Then check this one out!

Girly Air Force – Cute girls being cute fight planes. That’s right. Being. Not flying.

BanG Dream! 2nd Season – I never watched BanG Dream! 1st Season, but it’s on the list.

Endro~! – Interesting title with a squiggle aside, I love the sound of this one. A bunch of cute girls with swords and magic, tasked with slaying a demon king… Don’t do that and instead live peaceful lives together… Cute girls being cute, but lazy, heroes with swords and magic…?

Pastel Memories – Apparently Hanekawa from Monogatari was in this…? That’s enough to get me to try out episode 1.

Kouya no Kotobuki Hikoutai – Dogfighting: The Anime! Nice! This could be exciting!

Kemono Friends 2 – After a pretty long wait, and some apparent drama involving the original director being fired or something, Kemono Friends is back with it’s second season. And I’m sure it’ll be every bit of the cult hit that it was back when season 1 first aired.

Or maybe everyone will be too wrapped up in the director controversy to care about the show itself. I dunno.

Meiji Tokyo Renka – This is a Shoujo thing. Probably more up your alley, Shoujo Thoughts.

Circlet Princess – A Virtual Reality tournament series set in a school and produced by Silver Link. This is totally my thing!

Kemurikusa (TV) – “The science-fiction action story follows girls who fight with weird entities nicknamed “mushi” (bugs) and survive in a world of red fog.”

This sounds pretty dope.

B-Project: Zecchou*Emotion – Another B-Project series. The Innominate Podcast keep mentioning this during our sessions. I should probably check this out so I know what they’re on about!

Dimension High School – Aren’t those real people on that promotional poster? Is this even Anime? WHAT ARE YOU DIMENSION HIGH SCHOOL? ARE YOU REAL?!

Rinshi!! Ekoda-chan – WHY DO THE ENTRIES FURTHEST DOWN THE MAL CHART ALWAYS HAVE WEIRD AND CREEPY PROMOTIONAL POSTER ART?

Mini Toji – No synopsis. Cute chibis.

Bermuda Triangle: Colorful Pastrale – No synopsis, so I’m going to take a guess here based on the title and promotional poster…

“Cute girls being cute mermaids in the not-so-cute Bermuda Triangle”.

Ame-iro Cocoa: Side G – “In the fifth season of the Am-”

Fifth. Season. I have never seen this before.

Star☆Twinkle Precure – The 1000000000000000031st season of Precure. No. I still haven’t seen any Precure. Yes, I know that has to change. Not today.

Virtual-san wa Miteiru – No synopsis, but I’m guessing it’s some isekai thing in a virtual world based on that incredibly low resolution poster.

Hulaing Babies – Cute girls being cute hula dancers.

Mannaka no Rikkun@Kin Tele – Looks like a kids thing.

And that’s everything. I’m sure. I’m positive. 99% certain. Let me know if I missed anything and I’ll add it here. Honestly, this season is looking fantastic. We’ve got some potentially great new series right off the bat with the likes of Shield Hero and The Promised Neverland and some super exciting sequels like Date A Live III and Mob Psycho 100 II. There’s even some risque stuff in the form of Domestic no Kanojo. All in all, this looks like it’s going to be a fantastic start to the year.

And as always, I look forward to seeing how things go over the course of the season and what ends up coming out on top for me. Anything can happen!

  1. Nice round up.
You should check out the first season of the Morose Mononokean at some point (Fukigen na Mononokean). It isn’t brilliant but it is entertaining enough and I’m looking forward to the second season particularly after seeing the opening episode of season two. It seems to have stepped up its game and hopefully that wasn’t just a fluke.

      1. Yes, it is. The original series was in black and white. To give you more context, this came out the same decade as Speed Racer and some of Tezuka’s other works such as Wonder 3, Kimba the White Lion, and the original Astro Boy series.
