Overall First Impressions + What I’ll Be Watching: Autumn 2018 Anime Season

So the Autumn 2018 Anime Season has been underway for quite a while now, and pretty much everything has been airing for… A good few weeks. Unfortunately I’m really late with this one because I simply haven’t had time to write anything due to some really life changing events (all positive, I assure you), but here are my long overdue, collective First Impressions of the current Anime season. Better late than never I suppose!

I can assure you all that after this post, I’ll be making an effort to return to more regular posting, as well as interacting with the community again. It’s just been a very busy time and for that I am sorry! I’ll also be honest and admit that I haven’t had too much time to watch Anime in the last month, and as a result, I haven’t seen anywhere near as many premieres as I normally would have. Sorry about that.

Anyway… Now that I’ve gotten that out of the way, time for the usual rambly intro that I do for these kinds of posts.

*pastes in template*

As always I’ll be splitting everything into tiers, which are described below.

And as usual I won’t be watching any of these shows weekly because I kind of hate doing that.

So without further delay, here are the tiers.

The Tiers:

  • Incredible – Will Most Definitely Watch: Shows listed under this tier will be shows that I’ll most definitely be watching as soon as possible. These are the shows that currently have me the most invested, that keep me glued to my monitor and that have me literally filled with excitement and suspense from beginning to end, every episode. Shows in here all have the potential to become a member of my favourites (although anything can change over time).
  • Looks Interesting – Will Watch: Shows in this tier will be shows that I’ll be watching at some point because they seem like they could go in interesting directions and I’m looking forward to seeing where they will end up. These are shows that, while they had some issues or didn’t have me fully invested, are still engaging enough to warrant further watching.
  • Decent – Will Carry On With It: Shows that had a lot of issues or didn’t really grab me will be under this tier. I’ll be watching these and enjoying them, but there’s a high chance I’ll be stopping and starting these frequently and taking my time with them.
  • Meh – Will Watch Begrudgingly: Shows that are just pretty darn terrible but I feel I should watch for whatever insane or ridiculous reason will be listed here. Watching these shows will no doubt be painful, but I need to persevere for whatever excuse that I’ll no doubt forget upon reaching the halfway point. Of course, things can improve over time. Maybe these will?
  • Not Feeling It – Will Stall For Now: I never drop shows permanently, because my goal is to watch every Anime ever. I’ll never manage to do that in my lifetime, but I’d love to get as close to doing so as possible. However, these shows made me feel nothing, were completely yawn inducing or just had nothing going for me so I’ve put them to the side for god knows how long. I may pick them up again, but it’ll be unlikely to be any time soon.
  • I have Little To Say – The Rest: This is mostly reserved for stuff I generally have no comment on, shows I didn’t check out or second seasons to shows I haven’t seen/have yet to finish.

So let’s break these shows down!

Incredible – Will Most Definitely Watch:

Sword Art Online: Alicization – Herpdy derp! The worst Anime ever made is back and it’s still so bad because everything A-1 Pictures makes it terrible because they are a soulless studio who aren’t passionate about making Anime.

Ehh… So Sword Art Online is back, and honestly I couldn’t be happier. The series has always had its flaws, and it’s far from perfect, but it’s been a longtime favourite of mine and I’ve always found myself enjoying it, even the Calibur arc.

Alicization however is a whole other ball game and is actively addressing the negative criticism that’s been directed at the series since the Aincrad arc was first published and “fixes” a lot of the “problems” that people have always had with the series and it’s writing, such as Kirito “being overpowered”.

It’s still not perfect mind you, there’s been a lot of exposition which is very likely going to turn a lot of viewers away, especially those who were never on board with the series to begin with. However, as a reader of the novels I will defend this, as much of this exposition, while seemingly pointless waffle, is actually very important to the later parts of the arc, and is used as a means to build and develop the setting of Underworld. One of the biggest criticisms of Sword Art Online has always been it’s lack of “world building” and as a result much of Alicization’s early story focuses heavily on just that. It makes for a much slower paced story, but I can assure you all that it pays off in spades.

So yeah, Alicization is one of the best Anime of the Season and already among the best shows of the year, and if it manages to follow the novels perfectly it may well be a 10/10. We’ll see.

Goblin Slayer – Oh boy, oh boy. A Dark Fantasy series with questionable themes for “terrible people”. How nice!

Continuing the seasonal trend of “if you like this show, you’re a terrible person”, Goblin Slayer is this seasons controversial show that triggered a lot of people and had them mounting the high horse of moral superiority again because it had a very tame rape scene in the first episode. Again, I’m not sure what people were expecting, given that the series is based on a Dark Fantasy Seinen Manga that ran in the same magazine as Ubel Blatt but… Hey. I wrote about this already. If you want to see a rant defending Goblin Slayer and shows like it (and I’m sure you don’t because this topic has already been discussed ad nauseam, both by myself and literally everyone else) you can read this.

So anyway, about the show itself, I think it’s good. Very good in fact, and it’s one of my favourite shows of the season, if not the entire year. We don’t get enough true Dark Fantasy Anime that are willing to go all the way with violence and gore, and I’m happy that Goblin Slayer isn’t pulling any punches, even if it wound up triggering half of the Anime community as a result. The clever goblin slaying strategies are good, violent fun and are inventive enough to stop the series from getting stale. If you’re a fan of Dark Fantasy, I strongly recommend checking this one out.

Seishun Buta Yarou wa Bunny Girl Senpai no Yume wo Minai – I didn’t expect an awful lot from this one outside of it having a super cute bunny girl, due to its absurd sounding premise, but honestly from what I’ve seen so far Bunny Girl Senpai is a genuinely good show. And it seems I’m not the only who thinks so, as the amount of love I’ve seen towards this one has far exceeded my expectations. It’s kind of insane.

Honestly, I haven’t seen anything beyond the premiere, but I’m interested enough to want to continue watching it as soon as possible, and the premiere alone was excellent enough to place it this high on the list.

The bunny girl may or may not also have something to do with why I like the show. …Best girl.

Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure Part 5: Golden Wind – Jojo is back with another season, and as usual it’s incredible and continues to be a top tier Shounen action series with insanely inventive ideas, a great sense of humour, amazing fight scenes and strong character chemistry and writing.

Part 5 also seems to have taken absurdity factor to new levels that I never even imagined were possible, even by Jojo standards. It’s kind of insane. And I love it.

This is by far one of the best Anime of the season, and if you haven’t gotten on board with Jojo for whatever reason, now is the time to do so.

A Certain Magical Index Season 3 – love A Certain Magical Index. It’s always been a favourite of mine and I’ve rewatched the series multiple times over the years, having a blast each and every time, and this third season is a reminder of why I love it so much.

What more can I say? It’s Index, and it’s amazing. If you’re a fan of the franchise, you’ll probably still love it, even after all these years. If you were never on board with it because you’re not Light Novel trash like me, then there’s probably not a lot for you here.

Looks Interesting – Will Watch:

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime – Another Isekai? Isekai are so boring! They’re all the same! *yawn*

Yeah, it’s another Isekai. And I ain’t going to complain because I personally really like Isekai and find them super fun, regardless if they’re “generic” or not. But Slime isn’t generic at all and is a very unique take on the genre that is both hilarious and kind of awesome. The main character is a generic slime monster from Dragon Quest. How can you not be even slightly interested?

Radiant – It’s a little unfortunate, but Radiant has been the subject of a lot of harsh criticism, due to its very typical opening arc that just kind of does what most Shounen stories like this do in the very beginning and I don’t think it’s all that fair.

Yes, a story should try to be as unique and engaging as possible from the very beginning, but I didn’t see anyone complaining when My Hero Academia or Hunter x Hunter (2011) did the same thing. This kind of storytelling, while very typical and unoriginal, is the norm for the majority of Shounen stories in Anime, and has been since the early days of Jump, which is why I honestly don’t mind it all that much.

And much like Black Clover which was similarly criticised for the exact same reasons, the show is already showing signs that it’s going to be doing it’s own thing that’ll make it stand out from its peers. And even if it doesn’t, I’m Shounen trash, so I’m still going to have a good time with it regardless.

Karakuri Circus – From the creator of Ushio no Tora, comes this show, which is yet another excellent Shounen series with some spectacular animation and a cool spin on the formula involving puppets. Very entertaining and I look forward to more.

Bloom Into You – This show is honestly great and is just so heartwarming and wholesome. It’s a very solid Yuri romance and I love it. Hopefully it stays this good.

As Miss Beelzebub Likes – Cute girls being cute villainous demons is both entertaining and hilarious and Miss Beelzebub is best girl.

Decent – Will Carry On With It:

Zombieland Saga – I had no idea what to expect from this show as there was no synopsis at the time when this started airing, but apparently it’s… Zombie Idols? It’s pretty entertaining at times and can often be quite funny, but in spite of my recently acquired love for idol Anime, I’m not feeling this one as much as I’d want to.

I’ve seen a lot of love for Zombieland Saga on Twitter, and that’s nice, but I guess I’m just not as on board as everyone else seems to be. It’s alright, it’s not bad, but it’s not amazing either. Maybe if I watch more, things will change.

Irozuku Sekai no Ashita kara – P.A Works have done it again with yet another show that’s neither amazing nor terrible and has wound up being simply being somewhere between “alright” and “good”. The concept is neat and the presentation is amazing as expected, but I feel like this could be better. There’s still a chance it could improve though.

Release the Spyce – Cute girls being cute intelligence agents is surprisingly decent. I kind of like this one.

Ms. vampire who lives in my neighborhood. – This cute vampire comedy is surprisingly not terrible and kind of funny. I can’t hate it.

Conception – This one has been getting a lot of shit for being a sexist, ecchi filled mess, but I actually quite enjoy it. Then again, this is coming from the guy who’s writing a post titled “In Defense of High School DxD” so what the fuck do I know?

Meh – Will Watch Begrudgingly:

Ace Attorney Season 2 – This one has done very little to improve on the first season which failed to capture the magic of the Ace Attorney games on almost every level. It just doesn’t work. Play the games.

Ore ga Suki nano wa Imouto dakedo Imouto ja Nai – The seasonal “little sister loves her brother” show and as you’ve probably already guessed, it’s nothing special. It’s not even that creepy or anything, it’s just boringly mediocre. At least the sister is cute.

Tsurune: Kazemai Koukou Kyuudoubu – I guess me and KyoAni are back to our usual relationship of “I don’t care about anything they put out” because… I just don’t care. This isn’t for me. Sorry.

Not Feeling It – Will Stall For Now:

Tokyo Ghoul:re 2nd Season – Jesus Christ has this adaptation be absolutely dreadful. I was never a big fan of Tokyo Ghoul to begin with. Even the first season which is generally agreed to be at least “okay”, with a large number of Anime fans even going as far to say it’s “very good”, wasn’t something I’d consider amazing. It had an amazing first episode, but quickly derailed into a badly written fighting Shounen dressed up as a Psychological Seinen, before ending on a high note with some amazing development for the protagonist. Then Root A happened and destroyed the franchise forever and now :re has happened, and could have been great, but decided to skip entire story arcs and present the story in a way that makes no sense to anyone who hasn’t read the Manga.

I get it. We could go read the Manga. But we shouldn’t have to. I still don’t understand who this adaptation is for. It’s not for the Anime fans because it’s literally impossible to make sense of and it’s not for the Manga fans because it poorly adapts the story that they’re familiar with and that they love so much by skipping key parts of the story and being a poor representation of the source material. I just don’t really understand why Pierrot skipped the second half of the original Manga and jumped right into :re and provided no context. I don’t understand why they ever thought rushing through and skipping story arcs was a good idea. I don’t get it. At all.

Am I being overly harsh? Probably. But considering I’ve heard nothing but amazing things about the source material, I feel bad for the fans who wanted to see a good adaptation. It’s a shame.

Hinomaruzumou – Alright, here we fucking go. It’s hard for an adaptation to disappoint me. It’s not something that happens very often, and even if things don’t go exactly perfect, I’m normally able to forgive and forget or understand that that’s just how things are sometimes and get over it.

But what even is this? This is not good. This isn’t even okay. It’s terrible. And it’s a real, crying shame because the Manga is one of the greatest Sports/Battle Manga to come out in years.

But Gonzo fucked up. They skipped entire story arcs, many of which were central to the overarching story and focused heavily on the growth of the characters and the incredible art style of the Manga has been completely lost and bastardised in the Anime’s interpretation of it. This isn’t only a poor adaptation in terms of writing, but also in terms of presentation. This is awful. I haven’t been this let down by an Anime adaptation since Aku no Hana.

Hinomaruzumou could have been one of the best Anime of the Season, if not the entire year. Instead what we got was a show that made a complete mockery of the source material to the point that it isn’t even worthy of it’s name.

Fuck you, Gonzo.

…I’m sorry.

I Have Little To Say – The Rest:

Fairy Tail: Final Series – I never finished Fairy Tail (2014) because I just got around to it, but despite all the shit it gets, and how critical I’ve been towards the series over the many years I’ve been following it, I do still enjoy it quite a bit. I’m sure this final series will be fine and that I’ll like it when I get around to it.

Dakaretai Otoko No.1 ni Odosareteimasu. – GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY SHITTTTTTTTTTTTT (I’m not the audience for this show. Sorry.)

Kishuku Gakkou no Juliet – I didn’t watch this.

SSSS.Gridman – This wasn’t on the MAL chart when I made my Pre-Airing list and therefore I didn’t watch it. Looks very good though.

Ulysses: Jeanne d’Arc to Renkin no Kishi – To my IRL friend who really likes this and reads my blog: I didn’t watch this yet. Sorry.

Kaze ga Tsuyoku Fuiteiru – Is this good?

Uchi no Maid ga Uzasugiru! – “Home Comedy”. “Hardcore lolicon”. lol.

Golden Kamuy 2nd Season – I haven’t finished Season 1 yet. Are there CGI bears in this one too?

Gaikotsu Shotenin Honda-san – I’ve been told this one is hilarious, but I haven’t seen it yet.

RErideD: Derrida, who leaps through time – This like something I’d like. Didn’t watch it though.

Double Decker! Doug & Kirill – “We’re all going to Twechar! On a double decker! For 5p each! To Twechar beach!”

Akanesasu Shoujo – I want to watch this. But I haven’t.

Senran Kagura Shinovi Master: Tokyo Youma-hen – Boobies (I haven’t seen it yet).

Jingai-san no Yome – Hilarious.

Anima Yell! – Cute girls being cute cheerleaders. I like the character designs. Haven’t seen it yet.

Merc Storia: Mukiryoku no Shounen to Bin no Naka no Shoujo – Looks like Grandia. I should watch this.

Sora to Umi no Aida – This has a 4.88 average on MAL, what the fuck? Is it that bad?

Gakuen Basara – I never watched Sengoku Basara.

Sono Toki, Kanojo wa. – I forgot about this.

Bakumatsu – I also forgot about this.

Himote House – And this.

Hangyakusei Million Arthur – lol Square Enix.

Kitsune no Koe – Didn’t watch.

Ken En Ken: Aoki Kagayaki – This didn’t have a synopsis, but now that it does it sounds cool. I might like this one.

The Night When Me and My Boss Spent the Night at the Capsule Hotel After the Last Train and He Passed His Fever to Me – As I suspected, this is a Hentai. No, it’s not a good one.

Hashiri Tsuzukete Yokattatte. – It’s only 4 episodes.

Uchuu Senkan Tiramisù II – I never liked Tiramisu.

Inazuma Eleven: Orion no Kokuin – I’ve never watched a single episode of any Inazuma Eleven series. So I didn’t change that.

Okoshiyasu, Chitose-chan – GOOOOOOOOOO PENGUINS!

Gurazeni: Season 2 – BASEBALL.

The iDOLM@STER SideM: Wake Atte Mini! – Is Berserk back yet?

Devidol! – I heard they aired an episode out of order.

Hoshi no Shima no Nyanko – LOW. RESOLUTION. POSTERS. ARE. FUCKING. SCARY. PLEASE. STOP.

Aigan Kaijuu – No synopsis. RIP potential for funny jokes.

Annnnnd that’s everything. I think. Maybe.

If I did miss something feel free to flag it up.

As always I hope you all enjoyed hearing my thoughts on the season so far.

Honestly, I haven’t had an awful lot of time to watch a good chunk of stuff that I probably would have, but as I said before things have been very busy lately. Still, this season is one of the most promising we’ve had in a while, even with some disappointments like HinomaruzumouSword Art Online is better than it’s ever been, Goblin Slayer is a pleasant surprise if you’re a fan of gory, Dark Fantasy stuff, and Bunny Girl Senpai of all things is shaping up to be one of the biggest surprises of the entire year. Even Radiant is a good time.

Things can change however, and as always I look forward to seeing how things do change by the end of the season.

What are your first impressions and what are you watching this Season? Let me know!

10 thoughts on “Overall First Impressions + What I’ll Be Watching: Autumn 2018 Anime Season

  1. This season has been interesting because there were so many shows I was interested in from the beginning, an even though some of those then fell apart (or at least became boring to me) in the first couple of episodes, there were enough shows that after episode one really stepped up. I recently trimmed my watch list down because of time constraints so I’ve got a number of shows on hold that I actually wouldn’t mind picking up again at some point, which makes this my busiest watching season this year.
I’ll be looking forward to seeing your final thoughts on the season.

  2. Well, your first three mentioned animes, are all on my top three list for this season as well. I have really been having a lot of fun with those animes so far, especially Bunnygirl Senpai (that show is just amazing, and if it continues in the way that it’s doing now, it will be my favorite one of this season). SSSS. Gridman has so far been a really enjoyable romp as well. Far from perfect, but it contains really cool action, and certainly is an anime that I have been enjoying.
Looking forward to hearing more of your thoughts on this season 😊

    1. That’s really awesome Raistlin!

I’m glad you’ve been enjoying Bunny Girl Senpai also. It’s honestly been one of the biggest surprises of the year! Glad to hear SSSS. Gridman is also fun, I need to check it out for sure!

      Thank you for reading!

  3. The only show we have in common is Zombieland Saga, and even then that’s kind of hit and miss, now that it’s settled on being a horror/comedy/idol…thing. My personal favourite is Double Decker, but that’s because I watched a bunch of mystery anime on my way down the anime rabbithole.

Merc Storia is a “wander from country to country and help people” sort of fantasy adventure, kind of like the Pokemon anime. It’s perfectly serviceable if you want something that feels simple because it is simple, but knowing you and what you look for in anime, it’s probably not worth recommending for anything else. The rest of my list is Golden Kamuy 2, Gridman and Honda-san.

Apparently Sora to Umi no Aida is the #MeToo movement with bad CGI and SPACE FISH, to generalise a bunch from first episode impressions. I didn’t try it myself, but I’d wager it hasn’t gotten any better than that.

  5. A Certain Magical Index Season 3 has gotten really dark with several episodes in which secondary characters take the stage and there is blood and death everywhere. This is not a little loli and a little more magic and a lot of comedy anymore.
