Pre-Airing Impressions: Autumn 2018 Anime Season

The Summer sun has set and the Summer Anime Season of 2018 has come to a close, with the Autumn Season now on the horizon. And with it, a whole new boatload of shows are on their way.

So as usual, here’s my Pre-Airing thoughts on the upcoming season. Let’s dive in!

Note: As usual, I’m not covering movies or specials in this post. There’s a couple of OVA’s being listed this time around, but most of those also won’t be included. This list is going to be long enough without them.

Sword Art Online: Alicization – It’s been quite a while since the second season came out, but the third season of Sword Art Online is finally here and I couldn’t be more hyped for this one.

As a longtime fan of the original Light Novels, I already know what this arc is going to be about and what happens here, and I can assure everyone that this season is going to take the story of Sword Art Online to a whole new realm of greatness. It even goes as far as addressing much of the criticisms that people have had about the series over the years, including the harem and Kirto’s tendency to curb stomp everyone with little effort.

Of course, it’s Sword Art Online, which means it’s almost guaranteed that we’re going to be getting a bunch of snarky analysts claiming it’s the worst thing ever made and nitpicking the series to death on a weekly basis for the next year. Gotta keep the “Sword Art Online is a 1/10” meme running strong I guess.

I however, am really looking forward to seeing how this one gets adapted. This is going to be incredible and one of the best shows of the year for me. I can’t wait.

Fairy Tail: Final Series – Despite being a huge fan of Shounen, Fairy Tail is a series that I’ve had a very rocky relationship with over the years. At times it could be very good, especially in the early arcs, and at times it could be completely stupid and near insufferable to watch.

But in spite of its flaws, Fairy Tail has always been watchable, and much of the good makes up for the bad, so I’m glad to see that after such a long wait we’re finally getting a final, conclusive season to end the series once and for all.

Despite my tendency to keep up to date with the big Shounen Manga, I actually have no idea how Fairy Tail ended. I look forward to finding out.

Tokyo Ghoul:re Second Season – For some reason this absolute mess of an adaptation got a second season. I never finished the first season of :re because I just couldn’t wrap my head around what was really going on due to how much of the Manga was skipped over in the adaptation, but maybe this second season will fix things? I hope so, because from what I’ve seen the later stages of the :re Manga are really suited to my tastes.

…Maybe I should just go read the Manga…?

Goblin Slayer – I’ve got a close friend who’s really into the Light Novels for this one and he assures me it’s really, really good stuff. The premise definitely sounds like something I’d enjoy, and said friend has very good taste in Anime, so I’m hyped for this one.

A Certain Magical Index Season 3 – The meme is finally dead and A Certain Magical Index is actually getting a third season! What an amazing world we live in.

love A Certain Magical Index. It’s one of my all-time favourite Anime series and I’ve been waiting for a continuation for years so this is going to be a real highlight for me. If we’re lucky they might even finish adapting the remainder of the original Index Light Novels! That’d be really nice.

Definitely going to be a contender for Anime of the Season for me.

Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure Part 5: Golden Wind – Speaking of long awaited, excellent sequels, Jojo is back too! I don’t know an awful lot about Part 5, but I’ve heard from fans of the Manga that it’s one of the strongest parts of the Jojo Manga and is where Araki really started to flex his creative muscles and just go completely insane with his already wacky ideas.

Part 4 was one of the best Anime to come out in recent years and the series in general has always been a strong contender for a spot in my favourite Anime franchises, so I really can’t wait to see how this one goes. Yet another contender for Anime of the Season.

Seishun Buta Yarou wa Bunny Girl Senpai no Yume wo Minai – A show about… Puberty Syndrome…? And a bunny girl…? This one definitely has a weird premise, but my love for bunny girls compels me to check this one out.

Irozuku Sekai no Ashita kara – This one is the latest effort by P.A Works and looks like it’ll be a pretty unique take on the magical high school genre involving time travel and the like. P.A Works have definitely been stepping up their game recently with titles that extend beyond their usual Slice of Life stuff, so I look forward to seeing how this one turns out.

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime – Herpdy derp! Another “generic” Isekai that is killing Anime! Anime is dying!

Ahem… That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime is an Isekai show, but it’s also one of the most unique executions of the genre I’ve ever seen and I look forward to seeing how the Anime adaptation handles the story. Like, the main character is in another world, but instead of being a powerful swordsman, he’s an itty bitty slime monster like the guys you’d see from Dragon Quest. How can you not be the slightest bit intrigued by that idea?!

Bloom Into You – I don’t know an awful lot about this one, but I’ve been assured by some friends and fellow bloggers that have read the original Manga that is is a definite one to keep an eye on, so I’m going to be doing just that.

Looks like it could be a really great Yuri series. Looking forward to it.

Boarding School Juliet – This is apparently Romeo and Juliet, but set in a boarding school. This could be fun.

Ulysses: Jeanne d’Arc to Renkin no Kishi – The same friend who recommended Goblin Slayer also recommended I check this one out, so I’ll be doing just that. Looks like a neat Fantasy series.

Radiant – I’ve never heard of this one, but apparently it’s based on a Shounen Manga that’s been running since 2013? It definitely looks like my cup of tea judging from the art style and premise sounds like your usual Shounen greatness. I had no idea this was a thing, but I’m really looking forward to this one now!

RErideD: Derrida, who leaps through time – Looks like it’ll be a solid Sci-Fi Drama series. We don’t get enough of those any more, so I can’t wait to see how this’ll be.

Ore ga Suki nano wa Imouto dakedo Imouto ja Nai – Seems like the obligatory little sister loves her older brother and is a also a Light Novelist show. At least the sister is… Cute?

Zombieland Saga – This one has no synopsis, but I’m pretty sure this isn’t an Anime adaptation of that movie Zombieland from years ago that nobody remembers.

…Or is it? Guess we’ll see.

Golden Kamuy 2nd Season – I never finished Golden Kamuy because I just never got around to it, but I heard it was one of the best shows to come out of its season so I’m glad it’s getting a second season so soon. I’ll get to it one day.

Tsurune: Kazemai Koukou Kyuudoubu – The latest KyoAni show. This time it’s cute boys doing cute archery. Nah.

Conception – I love the look of this one aesthetically. Looks like my jam.

Double Decker! Doug and Kirill – Apparently this is your typical “investigator duo team up to solve crimes and investigate illegal things in a Sci-Fi setting” show. I like the sound of this one. Should be fun.

Release the Spyce – Cute girls being cute intelligence agents. I’m actually interested in this one and the girls look super cute.

Senran Kagura: Shinovi Master – Tokyo Youma-hen – I’ve never played the Senran Kagura games, but they seem like fun fan-servicey games and I’ve always been interested in checking them out. This is apparently a second season too? Guess I’ll watch the first one before diving into this one.

Ms. vampire who lives in my neighborhood. – Cute girls being cute vampires. Again, I’m actually interested in this one. This could be good fun.

UzaMaid – This one sounds funny.

Ace Attorney Season 2 – The first season of Ace Attorney was a bit of a mess presentation wise and failed to capture the spirit of the original Ace Attorney games in almost every way, so… I’m not really looking forward to this one. At all.

Run with the Wind – This is Production I.G’s latest Sports adaptation and it sounds like it could be really interesting. Production I.G have always done an excellent job at Sports, with the likes of Kuroko no Basket and Haikyuu! so I have no doubts this will also be something really nice. Looking forward to it.

Dakaretai Otoko No.1 ni Odosareteimasu. – This might be gay. Also one of the men on the promotional poster looks exactly like Hibari from Reborn! and that scares me.

Hinomaruzumou – Why the heck is this so low down on the popularity chart? This is a great Shounen Sports Manga with some of the best writing and characters to come out in recent years, and I’m so glad that it’s getting an Anime adaptation.

This one is likely going to fly under a lot of people’s radar, but I implore you all to check it out. If it’s anything like the Manga, you won’t be disappointed. Especially if you’re a fan of Shounen and Sports.

As Miss Beelzebub Likes – Cute girls being cute villainous demons.

Karakuri Circus – Looks like a fun Shounen action series involving puppets or something? I’m down with this.

Gaikotsu Shotenin Honda-san – A skeleton works in a book store. Sounds funny.

Gakuen Basara – Apparently this is a Sengoku Basara spin-off set in a high school? This could be hilarious.

The Girl in the Twilight – Cute girls doing a cute ritual of some sort.

Sora to Umi no Aida – Cute girls being cute Space Fishermen…?

Himote House – Cute girls being cute housemates (with a cute cat!)

At That Time, She. – This one sounds really interesting and will focus on the love lives of four different female characters. This could be great.

Han-Gyaku-Sei Million Arthur – “Based on Square Enix’s massively multiplayer online role-playing game”. This could either be great or terrible. It’s a video game adaptation, so I don’t have high hopes.

Jingai-san no Yome – A high schooler is forced to marry a “mysterious creature” called Kanenogi. …wat

Bakumatsu – The typical historical action series. These have never been my thing, but I’ll check it out.

Anima Yell! – Cute girls being cute cheerleaders. I’ll watch it for the cute character designs.

Merc Storia: Mukiryoku no Shounen to Bin no Naka no Shoujo – The promotional poster reminds me of old PlayStation 1 RPG’s, so I think I’ll like this one. A lot.

Kitsune no Koe – Guy wants to be a popular singer but hates how he looks so uploads his music via a fox avatar. Could be alright?

The Night When Me and My Boss Spent the Night at the Capsule Hotel After the Last Train and He Passed His Fever to Me – What even is that title? It’s so long and kind of hilarious.

Looks like the seasonal dose of Hentai. You decide if that’s good or bad.

Space Battleship Tiramisu Season 2 – I had no idea this show had a Season 1, but it looks good!

Inazuma Eleven: Orion no Kokuin – Another entry in this massive franchise that I’ve never watched a single episode of. I probably won’t bother with this any time soon.

I’m glad I could keep running. – It’s 4 episodes long. I’ll watch it.

Okoshiyasu, Chitose-chan – There’s a penguin on the promotional poster. Yes I will watch it solely for that reason.

Ken En Ken: Aoki Kagayaki – No synopsis. I have no idea what this is other than it’s based on a game.

The iDOLM@STER SideM: Wake Atte Mini! – I’ve never seen a single episode of any iDOLM@ASTER related shows, so I’ll probably not watch this. I guess this is why Berserk is on hiatus again.

Gurazeni: Season 2 – I’ve never heard of Gurazeni: Season 1, so I probably won’t bother with this.

Devidol! – No synopsis, but the girl on the cover looks cute, so I’ll watch it.

Hoshi no Shima no Nyanko – LOW. RESOLUTION. CATS. ON. THE. POSTER.

Aigan Kaijuu – No synopsis. Weird animals are surrounding a heart. Anime of the season…?

And that’s everything. I’m sure. I’m positive. 99% certain. Let me know if I missed anything and I’ll add it here. If I’m being completely honest, this season looks like it’s going to be one of the best seasons we’ve had in years. I haven’t been this excited for a season in forever. Many of my favourite franchises, such as Sword Art Online, Jojo and Index are getting new seasons and there are so many shows that aren’t sequels that also look fantastic, like Goblin Slayer, Radiant and Hinomaruzumou. This season is really going to shake up my end of the year rankings, for sure.

As always, I look forward to seeing how things go this season and what ends up coming out on top for me.

And stay tuned for some First Impressions posts for any of the shows I decide to write about as well as an overall First Impressions post once the season is fully underway.

Time for sleep

  1. So many shows! It’s truly difficult to make a decision what to watch (I usually pick 4-5 shows to watch, any more I sadly can’t watch because of time). But no question about it: Sword Art Online is the one I’m looking forward to the most as well. Really can’t wait as it’s truly one of my alltime favorite animes. And yes ofcourse it will (as usual) get the hate treatment again, but hey: I don’t care lol 😂😂
Another show that I am looking forward to myself is Release the Spyce. I saw a trailer for it, and seen some other bloggers write about it too, and I really like the premise for it. As for the others? No real clue yet, but I’ll choose one after I see some reviews on some of these. Great post, and really nice overview of all the anime goodness that is heading our way 😊

    1. It’s crazy how many shows we have this season and even more crazy how many of them have been good so far! It’s insane!

Release the Spyce seems like an interesting choice. I’ll definitely need to give it a shot sooner rather than later!

      Thank you for reading!

  2. A lot of potential emerging this season… about time after a generally disappointing Spring and Summer seasons. (On the other hand, they probably seemed worse than they really were because we were awfully spoiled by Winter ’18.)

Yay for Index, I’ll be watching but I’m still waiting on more Railgun.

  3. Well, if it’s guys doing sports, gay dudes, penguins or singing guys I’m all in. Also, zombies. I’ll probably have a hard time to keep up with anything but I might try one or perhaps two. I haven’t really looked into the season and most of the names say me nothing.

    (I loved Zombieland 😳😱😎)

    1. I’m likely going to be holding off on SAO myself until it finishes airing as I can’t imagine watching 50+ episodes weekly. That’d kill me! Plus I haven’t finished Season 2 yet because I read the novels, so I never felt rushed to do so.

Hope you come to a decision!

      1. I watched the first episode at least. Wasn’t bad but it didn’t do a great job explaining stuff until the trail end of the neatly hour long episode. My only problem with it really.

The other stuff I did cheek out was pretty fun too though 🙂

  4. I’m definitely looking forward to Sword Art Online. For all that there are the memes and haters, there are a lot of SAO fans who are eagerly awaiting more of it. But yeah, we will have to endure yet another round of snarkiness and criticism from people who hate the show just because they do.
As for everything else, I’m just trying stuff as it comes out and seeing what sticks this season. I’ll hopefully end up with a bigger watch list than Summer but either way as long as I have fun I’m fine with that.

    1. Definitely! And we’re all riding the hype train now that it’s started airing! Thankfully we can just turn our brains off to the hate and focus on ourselves which is probably the best option for everyone!

Hope you find plenty of stuff to watch this season! Enjoy!

  5. Wow, the way you sort through every single show that’s about to air—now that takes determination! But you already know what I’m excited for: SAO’s Alicization and Index III . . . I’m starting to realize that we’re more similar than I initially thought . . .
Oh wait, yeah, no, I’m defs looking forward to archery boys—there’s our difference, that’s right ahahaha!

  6. I have enjoyed the past seasons of Sword Art Online. Your description of the upcoming series has got me even more interested in season three. Goblin Slayer sounds cool. Time will tell if your friend is right about the show.
