Pre-Airing Impressions: Spring 2018 Anime Season

The Winter 2018 Anime season has ended, and before things for the next season really get rolling, I’ve decided to once again share my pre-airing thoughts on the shows that will be coming out.

So let’s go!

Note: As usual, I’m not covering movies or specials in this post. There’s a couple of OVA’s being listed this time around (like Batman Ninja), but most of those also won’t be included. This list is going to be long enough without them.

My Hero Academia Season 3 – My Hero Academia has been one of the most incredible fighting Shounen adaptations in recent years, and while it’s had a few minor issues throughout its run so far, I’ve been having the time of my life with every single episode I’ve seen thus far. I haven’t been this on board with a Shounen series since Hunter x Hunter or World Trigger, and that in itself has me incredibly excited for what’s to come.

I’m really looking forward to this one, and I hope that the series just keeps getting more and more seasons for many years to come. Here’s hoping for another fantastic season for the third year in a row!

Steins;Gate 0 – I haven’t seen Steins;Gate, despite having owned the complete series on DVD for about 4 years, so I have no idea what to expect from this show, and given that it’s related to the original series, I’m probably not even going to watch this.

Even still, it’s really nice to see that this iconic series is getting a new season. Happy for the fans, and I’m looking forward to jumping on the bandwagon one day.

Tokyo Ghoul:re – I’ll be honest, I’ve never been the biggest fan of Tokyo Ghoul. It’s always felt like a really bad version of Parasyte, that’s more akin to a poorly constructed battle Shounen series than a psychological Seinen about a young man struggling with the monster inside him. And that’s just my take on the first season. Root A was a disaster on every single conceivable level and was an absolute trainwreck of a series in my opinion.

However… From the bits and pieces I’ve seen of the Manga, it seems Tokyo Ghoul:re has some real potential to become something that’s actually pretty good. If it follows the Manga and if it gets far enough into it. I guess time will tell…

I’m looking forward to seeing how this one goes, and if it retcons the entirity that awful second season.

Shokugeki no Souma Season 3 (Second Cour) – I haven’t seen much of Shokugeki no Souma, outside of some foodgasm scenes i stumbled across on Facebook back when the first season started airing. Still, I’ve heard great things about this series, and I think it’s pretty great that it keeps getting more and more seasons.

Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online – The worst Anime ever made is coming back in the form of a spin-off HERPDY DERRRRPPPPPP!!!

In all seriousness, I love Sword Art Online. Unironically. And I think people need to cut the franchise some slack. It’s nowhere near as bad as it’s been made out to be in recent years. The show is fine, and one of the most inoffensive things in Anime, despite everyone constantly raving on about how much the show “offended” them with its “badness”.

Anyway, this is a spin-off based in the world of Gun Gale Online, which was one of SAO’s more interesting and better developed settings. I’m not sure what exactly the focus of this series is going to be, but I’m down for more SAO side story content while we wait for the adaptation of the incredibly epic Alicization arc. Really looking forward to this one.

High School DxD Hero – I haven’t seen any of the previous seasons of High School DxD, and it just seems like one of those kinds of series that isn’t my thing. But I’m sure the fans are more than happy to be getting more.

Persona 5 The Animation – An adaptation of Persona 5? Neat! I still haven’t had the chance to play Persona 5 though, so I guess I’ll be skipping out on this one. Hopefully it’ll be better than the adaptation of Persona 4 which was… Meh.

It’s Difficult to Love an Otaku – My fiance would disagree. HAH. This one seems like it’ll be a charming romantic comedy kind of series. Seems nice.

Devils Line – Hey look! A show about a half-vampire! In high school! Falling in love with a human girl! Twilight comparisons aside, the Seinen tag that this show has makes me think that this might actually be good. If it steers clear of the cheesy vampire romance template, I could get behind this.

Full Metal Panic! Invisible Victory – A new Full Metal Panic series? Nice! It’s not made by KyoAni? That’s a shame. Still, I’m looking forward to this one.

Golden Kamuy – This one looks pretty interesting. A story about two people trying to beat some criminals in a race to find some ancient treasure in a historical setting? Count me in!

Tada Doesn’t Fall In Love – Seems like another romance, with the gimmick being that it focuses on a female transfer student and a boy named Tada who has never know what it feels to be in love. This could go either way.

Magical Girl Site – If you follow me closely on Twitter, you’ll already be very aware of how big a fan I am of the original Manga of this series. I’m such a huge fan that I was labelled a terrible person for liking it, which was hilarious in hindsight.

So of course I’m incredibly excited for this Anime adaptation, even if it’s clear that it won’t be adapting the full story because the Manga is still ongoing. It’s an extremely dark twist on the Magical Girl genre and is one of the better “edgy” series that the genre has to offer. This has the potential to be my Anime of the Season. I can’t wait for this one!

Magical Girl Ore – This one seems like a pretty hilarious take on Magical Girls involving all kinds of weird things, like demons with squirrel heads and the character turning into a “Magical Boy” and being part of an idol group…? Sounds hilarious.

3D Kanojo: Real Girl – A series about an otaku finding his first “3D” love interest? Seems fun.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes: The New Thesis – Encounter – I can already hear the elitists crying like little babies over the fact that their beloved, legendary masterpiece is getting remade into “modern trash”. Honestly, as someone who enjoyed Legend of the Galactic Heroes quite a bit, I have to say that I’m pretty excited about this remake, unlike most people.

The original series is horrendously outdated, both in its presentation and in how awfully paced its story is in many places. This remake seems like it’s at least going to fix one of those issues, and the new artwork and animation look pretty damn great so far, if the trailers are anything to go by. I’ve seen a lot of fans complain about the new character designs being too “bishounen”, but the original series was just as bishounen. And I’ll take CGI ships that actually move, with distinguishable features to make them stand out than static, muddy blocks firing “lines” at each other for 20 minutes.

I’m very excited for this one, so much so that it may actually make Legend of the Galactic Heroes better than it ever has been.

Dances with the Dragons – This one seems to be a fantasy, sci-fi series with a pretty interesting setting, but also seems like one of these shows that could either turn out to be completely awesome or really bad and all over the place.

Hinamatsuri – A Yakuza guy and a girl with supernatural powers end up living together and chaos ensues? Sounds fun!

Piano no Mori – A music Anime that actually seems like it’ll be interesting?! It seems it’ll be focusing on two piano players from very different backgrounds becoming best friends through their love of playing music. Seems like this may be one of the more emotional series this season, especially if they decide to focus on the struggles of playing professionally and being pressured by your background.

Caligula – The standard “trapped in a virtual world” story, only this time the world is run by an “idol program” that is sentient and the people, regardless of their age, are stuck in a high school world where they are forced to remain in high school forever. This could either be really interesting or really, really awful.

Megalo Box – This is apparently a project that is being made to celebrate the 50th anniversay of Ashit no Joe? I haven’t seen Ashita no Joe, but I guess I’ll check this one out?

Dorei-Ku: The Animation – I completely forgot that this adaptation was happening! Dorei-Ku is one of my all-time favourite Manga series, and is incredibly dark and twisted, with a story that focuses on a survival game where the players can “enslave” one another at a price. As you can imagine, all kinds of fucked up stuff happens throughout this game, and a lot of isn’t pretty. At all.

However, while I am very excited for this adaptation, I’m also quite cautious about the direction it could take. The original Manga is extremely graphic, and even a bit sexually explicit in a lot of scenes, and I’m not entirely confident that the Anime will leave a lot of these scenes uncensored.

However it is being animated by the studio that did High School DxD and School Days, so even if it does get censored, there’s a chance that there will be an uncensored version of the episodes as well, which would be great. The Manga also ended fairly recently, so this could also end up being a full adaptation.

I can’t wait for this one!

Shiyan Pin Jiating – A show about a couple of scientist parents raising their kids who are actually their own creations and trying to be a “normal” family. Seems like fun.

Captain Tsubasa (2018) – I haven’t seen any of Captain Tsubasa before, and I have no idea if this is a sequel, or a remake, or whatever so… I probably won’t bother with this one.

Kakuriyo no Yadomeshi – A young girl inherits her recently deceased grandfather’s ability to see supernatural creatures, and ends up getting wrapped up into paying back her grandfather’s debt to a demon. The price? She has to marry him! But she decides to work back the debt instead? Sounds weird and potentially hilarious.

Tachibanakan Triangle – There’s not a lot on this one at all, but it seems to focus on a young girl moving back to her hometown to study, and moving into a new dorm room that… Isn’t what she expected? I have no idea… It’s being animated by Creators in Pack, so maybe it’s a Netsuzou TRap kind of show? If so, count me in I guess!

Comic Girls – It’s a show a bunch of up and coming girls living together and making Manga. Sounds like a less industry focused Shirobako. I’ll take it!

Juushinki Pandora – Oh wow, this one sounds like a very compelling and awesome sci-fi story about humans and AI fighting each other in an epic war of some kind. I can’t wait to see how this one goes!

Amanchu! Advance – More Anamchu, huh? I didn’t see the first series, so I’ll probably not be bothering with this one until I do.

Lostorage Conflated WIXOSS – WIXOSS is one of my favourite Anime franchises of all time. The original Selector series is in my Top 5 Anime series, and the more recent Lostorage Incited WIXOSS proved to be a worthy successor to it.

This one is going to be a direct sequel to Lostorage Incited, and will even be bringing back the original cast from Selector! Hell yeah! I am so hyped for this one, and if it lives up to the rest of the franchise, it will most definitely be the best show of the season. No contest.

I can’t wait!

Butlers: Chitose Momotose Monogatari – Supernatural butlers fighting each other? Sounds like Black Butler all over again… Take that as you will.

Hisone to Maso-tan – A girl joins the air force and show how ends up a freaking dragon. Sounds insane.

Akkun to Kanojo – A romantic comedy about a male tsundere and the relationship he has with his girlfriend. Nice gimmick. Could be fun.

Alice or Alice: Siscon Niisan to Futago no Imouto – A brother deals with his sister complex while looking after his twin sisters, both apparently named Alice. It’s not even trying to hide what it is…

Uma Musume: Pretty Derby – “Based on a mobile game”. I have no other details to go on, but given how bad mobile game adaptations tend to be, I’m sure this won’t be anything special.

Inazuma Eleven: Ares no Tenbin – Another series based on Inazuma Eleven. I’ve never been interested in this series, so I’ll probably not watch this.

Hoozuki no Reitetsu 2nd Season: Sono Ni – Second cour of the second season of Hoozuki no Reitetsu. I haven’t seen any of the previous show, but I hope to get round to it one day.

Cutie Honey Universe – A new Cutie Honey series? Nice one.

Major Season 2 – I haven’t seen Major Season 1, despite hearing a lot of good things about it. Glad it’s getting more though.

Lupin III: Part V – More Lupin. More episodes added to the hundreds of episodes I need to watch some day.

Amai Choubatsu: Watashi wa Kanshu Senyou Pet – This one is probably another one of those “ecchi” series that’s actually a hentai. Either that or it’s an extremely creepy ecchi series. Fun times.

Uchuu Senkan Tiramisù – Obligatory Mecha series of the season. Hopefully this is better than the last few we’ve been getting.

Gegege no Kitarou (2018) – No synopsis, but given the “2018” in the title, this is probably a remake of some kind.

Souten no Ken Re:Genesis – Is this related to Hokuto no Ken or something? It looks like it could be, but there’s no synopsis so I have no idea. Also it’s by Polygon Pictures, so the animation could either be great like Ajin or dreadful like Knights of Sidonia. We’ll see I guess.

Last Period: Owarinaki Rasen no Monogatari – Looks like a wacky fantasy adventure with magic and monsters and stuff. Seems like I’ll enjoy this one.

Fumikiri Jikan – No synopsis. There’s a lot of these this season it seems.

Rokuhoudou Yotsuiro Biyori – Not-so-cute men running a not-so-cute tea shop.

Gudamn Build Divers – Is this a sequel to Gundam Build Fighters? Or is a spin-off where the characters from Gundam Build Fighters participate in the sport of professional diving? I liked Build Fighters, so I’ll watch either of those hypothetical shows.

Binan Koukou Chikyuu Bouei-bu Happy Kiss! – No synopsis, but judging from the promotional poster, I probably won’t like this show. Those topless men are causing my Free! PTSD to kick into overdrive. HELP.

Gurazeni – Baseball: The Anime – But Not Major. I probably won’t watch this.

Nobunaga no Shinobi: Anegawa Ishiyama-hen – Another show about Nobunaga?

Aikatsu Friends! – No synopsis, but the girls look cute.

Ladyspo – No synopsis. The girls don’t look as cute.

Wakaokami wa Shougakusei! – Cute girl learns how to be a cute inkeeper from a ghost. Sounds cute.

Koneko no Chii: Ponponra Daibouken 2 – The second season of the show about a cat. Meow. My cat will like this one.

Beyblade Burst Chouzetsu – THAT’S BEYBLAAAAAAAAAADEEEEEEEEE!!!!!

Kiratto Pri☆chan – Cute girls being cute Pri☆chan idols.

Duel Masters! – THAT’S DUEL MASTE- Duel Masters is getting more new seasons? Does anyone even remember Duel Masters?

Usagi no Matthew – Cute rabbit doing cute rabbit things.

Oretacha Youkai Ningen G – No synopsis. The poster scares me a lot.

Kekkeroke – KEK!

Quanzhi Gaoshou (2018) – “Based on the All-Star tournament from novel”. U wot m8?

Aggressive Retsuko (ONA) – A red panda office worker unleashes her frustrations with life through aggressive death metal music. Brutal.

Wo De Ni Tian Shen Qi – No synopsis.

Batman Ninja – Batman as a freaking ninja. Anime of the season probably.

And that’s everything. I’m sure. I’m positive. 99% certain. This season seems to be quite a bit of a step up from the last season for me. We’ve got adaptations of some of my favourite Manga series, some very promising looking sequels and new shows and we’re even getting a new WIXOSS!

As always, I look forward to seeing how things go this season and what ends up coming out on top for me.

And stay tuned for some First Impressions posts for any of the shows I decide to write about as well as an overall First Impressions post once the season is fully underway.

  1. I kind of did a cheer when you said that you haven’t seen Stein’s Gate. Not that it’s bad, but I haven’t watched it either and I kind of feel like I’m the only one. The show seems like something right up my alley, but I just never got around to it.
