Reviving the 30 Day Anime Challenge + 30 Day Anime Challenge #18 – Favourite Female Supporting Character

Remember the 30 Day Anime Challenge?

You don’t?

Well, it was originally a series of 30 “challenge posts” I’d make twice a week, for a total of 15 weeks, with each relating to a specific Anime related thing such as “My First Ever Anime” or “My Favourite Anime Couple”.

But after reaching around the halfway point, I began to slow down with these posts, and I eventually gave up on doing them entirely. Mostly out of laziness, but also because I just kind of forgot about it, or wanted to write something else. My last 30 Day Anime Challenge post was in March. It’s been forever.

And it’s been kind of bothering me that I never finished it, so much so that I’ve decided to pick up exactly where I left off, and attempt to finish it, both for my own enjoyment and as a way to get some shorter, more regular content out while I work on much bigger projects for the blog.

So… With that being said, the 30 Day Anime Challenge is back, and I’m aiming to have it completed by the end of the year! I hope you enjoy the remaining Challenge related posts!

With that announcement out of the way, let’s jump straight into Challenge #18: My favourite female supporting character.

Who could it be?

Shiraishi (Tanaka-Kun Is Always Listless)

There’s a lot to be said about the “best girl” of Tanaka-Kun Is Always Listless, Shiraishi. She’s pretty, she’s smart, she’s a dedicated and hardworking student and she’s a wonderful friend to have around. She’s Miss Perfect, and does everything she can to maintain her perfect image when around her fellow students.

However, when she’s alone, Shiraishi has a tendency to drop this perfect girl facade by tying her hair up, taking out her contact lenses in exchange for a pair of glasses and takes her make up off in favour of a more natural look, which, as a character trait, is both adorable and charming. Of course it’s her little secret.

Originally an outsider of the main group of friends, Shiraishi admires Tanaka from afar, and is madly in love with him, due to a misunderstanding between the two of them, where Tanaka was instantly able to recognise her while she was in her “natural” glasses-wearing state. She falsely believes Tanaka was able to tell it was her because he knows her really well, when in fact he only knew due to… Other reasons…

This whole situation creates a hilarious relationship between the two, with Shiraishi constantly pining over Tanaka, and Tanaka taking no notice of her feelings and being completely oblivious.

And it’s this relationship that Shiraishi shares with Tanaka, combined with her charming personality and quirky character traits that make her such a fantastic character, and my favourite supporting character.

I guess it also helps that, in a lot of ways, Shiraishi is very similar to my own significant other (minus the glasses), much like I’m similar to Tanaka (minus the obliviousness). It should come as no surprise that I ship the two of them. Like crazy.

So yeah. Shiraishi is best supporting girl and best girl in general.

I hope we eventually get a second season so I can see more of her fantastic character.
