Overall First Impressions + What I’ll Be Watching – Autumn 2017

The Autumn Anime Season is now in full swing, with the first batch of episodes for every show now released. Much like last season, I’m a little late with this because reasons, but here we are!

As always I’ll be splitting everything into tiers, which are described below.

And as usual, I won’t be watching any of these shows weekly because I kind of hate doing that.

So without further delay, here are the tiers.

The Tiers:

  • Incredible – Will Most Definitely Watch: Shows listed under this tier will be shows that I’ll most definitely be watching as soon as possible. These are the shows that currently have me the most invested, that keep me glued to my monitor and that have me literally filled with excitement and suspense from beginning to end, every episode. Shows in here all have the potential to become a member of my favourites (although anything can change over time).
  • Looks Interesting – Will Watch: Shows in this tier will be shows that I’ll be watching at some point because they seem like they could go in interesting directions and I’m looking forward to seeing where they will end up. These are shows that, while they had some issues or didn’t have me fully invested, are still engaging enough to warrant further watching.
  • Decent – Will Carry On With It: Shows that had a lot of issues or didn’t really grab me will be under this tier. I’ll be watching these and enjoying them, but there’s a high chance I’ll be stopping and starting these frequently and taking my time with them.
  • Meh – Will Watch Begrudgingly: Shows that are just pretty darn terrible but I feel I should watch for whatever insane or ridiculous reason will be listed here. Watching these shows will no doubt be painful, but I need to persevere for whatever excuse that I’ll no doubt forget upon reaching the halfway point. Of course, things can improve over time. Maybe these will?
  • Not Feeling It – Will Stall For Now: I never drop shows permanently, because my goal is to watch every Anime ever. I’ll never manage to do that in my lifetime, but I’d love to get as close to doing so as possible. However, these shows made me feel nothing, were completely yawn inducing or just had nothing going for me so I’ve put them to the side for god knows how long. I may pick them up again, but it’ll be unlikely to be any time soon.
  • I have Little To Say – The Rest: This is mostly reserved for stuff I generally have no comment on, shows I didn’t check out or second seasons to shows I haven’t seen/have yet to finish.

So let’s break these shows down!

Incredible – Will Most Definitely Watch:

Black Clover – I love Black Clover so far. I’m a big fan of the original Manga, which I feel is the victim of undeserved ridicule and overly harsh criticism, and I feel this Anime adaptation is the same.

The production values are spectacular, the story is an emotionally driven, battle fuelled, Shounen adventure with a protagonist who, despite being incredibly loud and irritating at times, is both relatable and easy to root for.

The series has a long way to go before it steps into more unique shoes, but it’s going to get there, and when it does, it’ll be well worth the wait. I guarantee it. For now, while it’s fairly derivative, it’s still a fantastic Shounen story with some great action and emotional character drama. It’s my kind of thing, and I’m loving it.

You can find my more detailed First Impressions for Black Clover here.

March Comes in Like a Lion Season 2 – The first season of this show was absolutely incredible both as an emotionally gripping drama and as an engaging series Sports series about Shogi.

The production values and overall atmosphere of this series never cease to impress me, and I’m looking forward to watching this story unfold further.

March continues to be absolutely fantastic.

UQ! Holder – UQ! Holder is a weird adaptation in the sense that it’s catered towards fans of the original Manga and those who have been previously exposed to Negima! which means it’s going to alienate and confuse pretty much anyone who’s an outsider.

Thankfully, I’m not an outsider and am a big fan of the Manga and have read Negima!, so I’m able to appreciate the series for what it is, and I’m enjoying seeing the world of UQ! Holder come to life.

I just hope we get more than 12 episodes or a second season at some point, because this series deserves to have more of its material adapted. Here’s hoping!

Looks Interesting – Will Watch:

Just Because! – For a show that seems to be focusing on the mundane, inconsequential moments of various teenager’s lives, Just Because! is shaping up to be something really special.

It’s not perfect, nor is it the most engaging show of the season, but it’s a unique, enjoyable little series and is, so far, telling some really great and well grounded stories.

Hopefully it can keep this up.

My Girlfriend is a Faithful Virgin Bitch – This show is pretty great, has a likeable cast and is pretty damn hilarious.

As a fan of romantic comedy and immature sexual humour, I dig everything about this show. Can’t wait for more.

Recovery of an MMO Junkie – A nice unique take on the “main character is a NEET trying to reconnect with the real world” genre where the protagonist is a woman in her 30’s. Really charming and entertaining so far and deserving of more attention.

Give it a shot.

Osake wa Fuufu ni Natte kara – A fantastic little romantic comedy about a woman who’s at her cutest and most fun when she’s drunk and her husband dealing with her crazy, drunken antics. There’s not much to it, but it’s so charming and fun to watch that I can’t help but love every second of it.

Decent – Will Carry On With It:

Kekkai Sensen & Beyond – Kekkai Sensen is alright. The first season was an average and fairly forgettable story covered up by its wacky energy and insanely good production values.

This is more of the same, really. There’s not really an amazing story here, and the characters are nothing special at all, but there’s life in here and the production values and directing are spectacular, although not as great as the first season.

It’s entertaining enough to warrant a watch, but unless the story develops into something more, I doubt it’ll do much to improve my overall stance on the series. We’ll see I guess.

Ousama Game The Animation – Another death game series, and so far it’s average enough for me to not completely hate it. Perhaps it’s my usual biases at play, but yeah, I like it quite a bit and I feel there’s some potential here for things to improve.

I love me a good death game. Let’s see if it delivers.

Love Live! Sunshine!! Season 2 – It’s fun, it’s cute, and I sorta, kinda like idol stuff now, so… Here we are…

It’s decent, if anything. What’s happening to me?

Omiai Aite wa Oshiego, Tsuyokina, Mondaiji – I’ve only seen one episode so far, but this kind of messed up show of manipulation is right up my alley.

And of course I’m the only one enjoying it. It’s like Netsuzou TRap all over again! Wonderful!

Underrated and has potential to become something great by the end. Give it a shot if you’re on the fence.

Imouto sae Ireba Ii. – It’s better than Eromanga-sensei I guess. This could be much worse.

Inuyashiki – This is one of those shows that could become amazing or terrible in the end, and as such, I’m not sure where to put this on the list as of now aside from right in the middle.

It looks beautiful, and it’s good fun so far. Here’s hoping it becomes great in the end.

Shoujo Shuumatsu Royokou – This is an enjoyable enough journey of two girls exploring and surviving a post-apocalytpic world. This could go to some very exciting places, maybe.

Konohana Kitan – While there’s not much here for me, it’s very cute and uplifting, so much so that I can’t actively dislike it. If you’re a fan of this sort of stuff, this will be for you.

Two Car – A fun little sports show that has potential to get better. Nothing amazing, but nothing bad either.

Meh – Will Watch Begrudgingly:

Himouto! Umaru-chan R! – As I’ve said previously, I’ve never really understood the appeal of this show in the slightest.

Umaru is insufferable, the comedy isn’t all that great, and the show itself is just really generic while lacking any kind of unique execution or draw to make up for that genericness.

*yawn*

Dies Irae – Nazi’s and magic again. Getting real tired of these.

Juuni Taisen – I expected more from this, but so far I’m not getting all that much out of it. There’s still potential here, but I’m not convinced it’ll live up to it. We’ll see.

Code:Realise: Sousei no Himegimi – This show is yet more proof that Visual Novel adaptations are rarely a good idea, and like most of the ones I’ve seen, just isn’t interesting or entertaining enough for me to find something of value.

Maybe I’ll check out the novel though.

Houseki no Kuni – I guessed from the synopsis that I wouldn’t be all that into this show, and I was correct. Not feeling it.

Urahara – People seem to be loving this, but… Meh? I don’t get it.

Love Kome: We Love Rice Season 2 – It’s a fine short, but there’s not much here for me.

Not Feeling It – Will Stall For Now:

Yuuki Yuna is a Hero: Hero Chapter – I don’t care about Yuuki Yuna. At all. I know that’s a very controversial opinion to have, and seems dismissive, but I just really don’t care about this show at all. And I say that as a fan of this genre.

It’s just… Painfully boring.

*yawn*

Yuuki Yuna is a Hero: Washio Sumi Chapter – See above. *yawns harder*

Blend S – I like coffee, but aside from this shows focus on that, I don’t like much else about this. It’s cute girls being cute waitresses. If you like that, then you’ll like this. It’s not my thing, really.

I Have Little To Say – The Rest:

Kino’s Journey: The Beautiful World – So this is apparently a remake/readaptation of the original Kino’s Journey. I haven’t watched this yet, since I’ve been planning to watch the original, which I’ve been told is better than what has been shown of this so far. So I guess I’ll be avoiding this for now.

Gintama. (2017) – still haven’t finished the first season of Gintama. I’ll get to this one day.

Kujira no Kora wa Sajou ni Utau – I forgot to watch this one.

Osomatsu-san 2 – I’ve heard from some work colleagues who casually watch Anime that this is actually really good, but I haven’t seen the first season yet, so I’m yet to try this out.

Itsudatte Bokura no Koi wa 10 Centi Datte – Didn’t watch.

Hozuki no Reitetsu Season 2 – Haven’t watched the first season. Haven’t watched this.

Dia Horizon (Hi) – Didn’t watch.

Animegataris – Forgot this was a thing.

Garo: Vanishing Line – I haven’t seen the last 50 seasons of Garo.

Sengoku Night Blood – TYPHOON GRAPHICS.

RoboMasters: The Animated Series – ROBO. MASTERRRRRS!

The iDOLM@STER Side M – iDOL. M@STERRRRRS!

…GIVE ME BERSERK BACK!!!

Tsukipro The Animation – Didn’t watch.

Wake Up, Girls! Shin Shou – Apparently Wake Up, Girls! was a thing before. I’ve never seen it.

Infini-T Force – SUPERHEROES.

Evil of Live – Chinese adaptations strike again!

Classicaloid Season 2 – Still surprised this got a second season.

Taishou Chicchai-san – Shounen-ai and not for me.

Cinderella Girls Gekijou Season 2 – Didn’t watch Season 1.

Fireball Humorous – It’s 3 episodes, so I’ll get round to it.

Cardfight!! Vanguard G:Z – Gee:Zus they’re still making this?

Ame-iro Cocoa Series: Ame-con!! – The poster still has a doggy on it. Ruff! Ruff!

Oretacha Youkai Ningen – Spooky spooky. Scary scary.

Time Bokan: Gyakushuu no San Akunin – I don’t care about Time Bokan.

Glamorous Heroes – There’s nothing glamorous here.

Ku Pao Ying Xiong – Kung Pao Chicken?

Aiseki Mogol Girl – Didn’t watch.

Yodel no Onna – Yodel-Ay-Ee-Oooo!

Annnnnd that’s everything. I think. Maybe.

If I did miss something feel free to flag it up.

As always I hope you all enjoyed hearing my thoughts on the season so far. Better late than never!

Overall, this season is a bit of a low one for me. There’s a lot of second seasons to shows I haven’t seen before, and a good amount of the shows that aren’t don’t really interest me. However, what does appeal to me is pretty great and there are plenty of shows that have the potential to get better. I look forward to seeing how my impressions change by the end of the season.

What are your first impressions and what are you watching this Season? Let me know down below!

  1. I’m currently watching four shows of the new season: Two Car (which for me has been a bit disappointing, but this weeks episode did feel a little bit better than the previous ones), The Ancient Magus Bride (all I can say about thst one is that it completely blowing me away), The King’s game (not great, not bad either and Black Clover, I’m sorry to say that the last named show isn’t really working for me so far. It’s not that I think it’s a bad series, but I just can’t stand Asta’s screaming voice. It really gets on my nerves lol. Still I will continue to watch it anyway 😂 Hope you will continue to have fun with all these series 😀

    1. The Ancient Magus Bride is actually really cool, and it’s also gorgeous to boot. Very enjoyable show.

That’s a shame that Black Clover isn’t working out too well for you, but Asta’s screaming is definitely… Something… AAAAAA!

In the later parts of the Manga, Asta becomes far less screamy, but I’m not sure if the anime will reach that point. Here’s hoping!

      Enjoy the reason, Raistlin!

      1. Oh, not a problem at all. I’m liking Yuuki Yuuna, Mahoutsukai no Yome, and Love Live! the most (in roughly that order). That being said, I’m still trying to give Black Clover a fair shot and I’ve been a fan of UQ Holder (since it’s a sequel to one of my favorite series ever) even though the anime adaptation has been only okay so far.

Ahhh I got sidetracked playing a video game and I’m now deciding to quit it (for good) so I can find time to write that UQ Holder post I talked about earlier…

        No, thank you for sharing!

  2. Shame this season isn’t working for you. After three weeks, this is my best start to an anime season this year in that there are a lot of shows I am really interested in even if they aren’t exactly brilliant (and there’s enough shows that I’m genuinely loving so far as well). I look forward to seeing what you are thinking later in the season.
