The Summer sun has withdrawn, the leaves are falling of the trees and the Summer 2017 Anime Season has come to an end. We’re a day away from this years Autumn Anime Season kicking off, so I can think of no better time to get my pre-airing impressions for the latest shows out.
Note: As usual, I’m not covering movies or specials in this post. This list is going to be long enough without them.
Shokugeki no Soma: San no Sara – Despite being a huge fan of Shonen Jump and cooking I’ve never actually watched any of Shokugeki no Soma so unfortunately I don’t have much to say on this other than I’m glad it’s still getting new seasons. I’ll definitely be checking this out when I get around to the other two seasons though. I’m sure it’ll be great.
Black Clover – The original Manga for this series has been subject of a lot of harsh criticism for being a generic and uninventive Shounen series with no uniqueness whatsoever. I’m a huge fan of the Manga, and I completely disagree with these comments. There’s plenty of unique ideas in here packaged with the usual emotional appeal and awesome fights you’d expect from a fighting Shounen series.
I’m really looking forward to this one. Hopefully it’ll be a long-running series or get multiple seasons in the future. It deserves it!
Kekkai Sensen & Beyond – The first season of Kekkai Sensen was pretty decent. It had some of the most awesome and memorable visuals ever, and an incredible soundtrack that I still listen to frequently this day. Unfortunately, the plot itself was a tad messy and fell apart fairly quickly, which caused the series to wind up a humongous disappointment in the end.
I’m not entirely sure how this second season is going to pick up from the last one, given how things ended, but hopefully it maintains that spectacular visual quality and kickass soundtrack the original series was known for. Maybe they’ll even tell a good story this time around too. Regardless, I look forward to it.
Just Because! – There’s not a lot of information about this show as of yet, but it seems like it’ll be a pretty interesting coming-of-age show about a group of high school friends. I’m down for seeing how this turns out.
Himouto! Umaru-chan R – I’ve yet to finish the first season of this show, but I wasn’t all that into it at all, and Umaru is one of the most insufferable and irritating characters I’ve ever seen from an Anime series.
I’ve never really understood the hype behind this series, but I’m happy for those that enjoy it.
Dies Irae – Another show about Nazi’s and magic? This is a meme that needs to die. Still, it could be fun. Maybe this’ll be a good one.
Inuyashiki – This show seems to have a very unique and interesting premise that’s bound to have a ton of emotional storytelling and awesome action sequences. Plus, it’s being made by MAPPA, so it’ll no doubt look absolutely gorgeous.
Really looking forward to this one!
Ousama Game The Animation – Yet another “death game” Anime series focusing on a class of high school students who need to follow very specific instructions sent to them via cryptic e-mails. Despite the how many of these kinds of shows we get, I’m actually a really big fan of them, so I’m pretty excited for this one.
Juuni Taisen – This one focuses on 12 warriors who are each based on the Chinese Zodiac and need to battle against one another to grant a single wish. If each of these 12 warriors embodies the zodiacs, personality and all, this could be good fun!
My Girlfriend is a Faitful Virgin Bitch – Despite the very aggressive title, having read some of the source material, I can assure that this one is going to be pretty hilarious. Filled with a lot of sexual innuendo jokes and some hilarious character chemistry, if you’re a fan of romantic comedy Anime, you’re bound to enjoy something here. I look forward to having a good time with this one.
March Comes in Like a Lion Season 2 – I’ve yet to finish the first season, but what I have seen is spectacular and among the best I’ve ever seen from Shaft and Akiyuki Shinbo. I have no doubts this continuation is going to be just as incredible.
Kino Journey: The Beautiful World – A new Kino’s Journey Anime? I’ve never seen the original Kino’s Journey, so I have no idea if this is a continuation, or a remake, or whatever. I’m sure the fans are happy though!
Code:Realize: Sousei no Himegimi – This is based on a Visual Novel game I’ve been seeing literally everywhere, so I’ll probably give this a watch out of morbid curiosity. I have no idea how this’ll turn out, but given my history with Visual Novel adaptations, I’m not convinced it’s going to be something amazing.
Love Live! Sunshine!! 2nd Season – As you’re already aware, I’ve never been the biggest fan of Love Live. However, having recently become interested in, and dare I say a fan of, idol culture perhaps I’ll be able to appreciate this show, and its predecessors, a little more now. I look forward to finding out.
Gintama. (2017) – More Gintama! I still haven’t finished the original series, let alone the other 100 sequels, so I won’t be getting around to this any time soon. But Gintama is amazing, and I’m happy that they’re continuing to adapt the Manga after so many seasons. This is great news.
Imouto sae Ireba Ii. – The “little sister” show of the season. Surely it can’t be any worse than Eromanga-sensi. Right…? Right?
Shoujo Shuumatsu Ryokou – A post-apocalyptic show about two girls exploring the ruins of what was once civilization while fighting for survival? Count me in! This is going to be awesome!
Kujira no Kora wa Sajou ni Utau – This show looks like it has a pretty interesting setting so I look forward to seeing how it’s explored. It also looks beautiful, if the poster is anything to go by. And it’s by J.C Staff. Nice!
UQ! Holder – Remember when UQ! Holder wasn’t a sequel to Negima! and then became one out of seemingly nowhere? That was a weird experience.
Anyway, I’m a big fan of the Manga, so I can’t freaking wait for this adaptation. Here’s hoping it’s longer than 12 episodes and adapts a good portion of the Manga.
Recovery of an MMO Junkie – This show is about a 30 year old NEET struggling to re-connect with the real world after dropping out of reality for so long. This seems like it could be pretty funny, but also explore some interesting ideas since the character isn’t a teenager for once. I’m looking forward to this!
Osomatsu-san 2 – I’ve never watched Osomatsu-san 1, so I have no idea how this’ll be.
Houseki no Kuni – This one sounds weird. It focuses on a group of immortal beings called “Gems” battling against “Moon Dwellers”? Weird. Might be fun though.
Konohana Kitan – This show is about an adorable looking and clumsy fox girl who works at a hot spring inn. Seems cute. Really cute.
Yuuki Yuna is a Hero: Hero Chapter – Meh. I didn’t care for Yuuki Yuna at all. It’s always felt like less good version of Madoka Magica, another show I also didn’t care for at all. As such, I don’t care about this new series at all either. Cardcaptor Sakura for life.
Osake wa Fuufu ni Natte kara – A show about a woman who gets super cute and fun when she gets drunk, and her husband dealing with her drunken antics. Seems like a charming and funny little romance. Should be fun.
Omiai Aite wa Oshiego, Tsuyokina, Mondaiji. – This one is about a teenage student who winds up engaged to his teacher by pretending to be someone else. She rejects his advances, but he still pursues her. I’m not sure if this will be a comedy or a drama, but I’m hoping it’s the latter. It could prove to be very interesting if that’s the case.
Itsudatte Bokura no Koi wa 10 Centi Datta. – No synopsis. As a result, I have no idea what this is.
Yuuki Yuna is a Hero: Washio Sumi Chapter – *yawn* more Yuuki Yuna. I don’t care.
Hozuki no Reitetsu 2nd Season – I haven’t seen the first season, but I’ve heard it was great. I’m sure this’ll please the fans. Maybe I should get around to it?
Dia Horizon (Hi) – The premise seems interesting, but what is that art style? HELP.
Blend S – Cute girls being cute waitresses. They never run out of ideas for these things. I like coffee a lot though, so maybe this’ll appeal to me.
Animegataris – It’s about an “Anime Research Club”? This sounds like fun!
Garo: Vanishing Line – I’m kind of surprised to see that Garo is still getting new seasons, especially since it’s never been all that popular or well received. Regardless, I really enjoyed the original series, so I’m looking forward to this new one, even though I haven’t seen any of the previous seasons aside from the first one. I’m sure it’ll be good fun.
Urahara – Three girls team up to defeat some aliens. Cool!
Sengoku Night Blood – Looks like a cool action show, but it’s made by bloody TYPHOON GRAPHICS of all people. Y’know, the people that made One Room and Room Mate…? I guess they’re… Going up in the world…? Maybe…?
RoboMasters the Animated Series – ROBOMASTERS! …Is this a popular thing in Japan or something? I’ve got no idea.
Two Car – A show about motorcycle sidecar racing? Count me in!
Tsukipro The Animation – No synopsis. No comment.
The iDOLM@STER Side M – More iDOLM@STER. It’s the reason why Berserk keeps going on hiatus, so I can’t say I’m too happy about this.
…In all seriousness though, I don’t care about this at all.
Wake Up, Girls! Shin Shou – Am I right in saying that Wake Up, Girls! was a thing a while back? I forgot. No synopsis. No comment.
Intini-T Force – A girl summons superheroes to the world. Sounds weird, but cool.
Dynamic Chord – Another show following a group of musicians. Will this be the one that ends up being good?
Evil of Live – Oh no! Another Chinese adapation! However this one has a very interesting premise, so this might be the one that winds up being good. Maybe.
Classicaloid Season 2 – I’m a little surprised that this show, of all shows, got a second season. I wasn’t too keen on the first one, so I’m not too fussed about this.
Taishou Chicchai-san – It’s a Shounen-ai show and as such will likely not appeal to me.
Cinderella Girls Gekijou 2nd Season – I didn’t watch Season 1, so I have no idea.
Love Kome: We Love Rice 2nd Season – Cute boys being cute rice Season 2.
Fireball Humorous – 3 episodes, so I’ll watch it.
Cardfight!! Vanguard G: Z – They’re still making seasons of this? Jesus Christ.
Ame-iro Cocoa Series: Ame-con!! – No synopsis, but I the poster has a doggy. Ruff ruff!
Oretacha Youkai Ningen – Tags: Horror, Demon. Spooky spooky. Scaaaary.
Time Bokan: Gyakushuu no San Akunin – More Time Bokan stuff.
Glamorous Heroes – No synopsis, but the character designs are nice.
Ku Pao Ying Xiong – From the title, this looks like another Chinese adaptation. It’s about parkour, so it could be interesting.
Aiseki Mogol Girl – No synopsis, but it looks like some weird kids thing.
Yodel no Onna – Yodel-Ay-Ee-Oooo! (It’s a show about yodeling).
Annnnnd that’s everything. I think. I’m pretty sure I didn’t miss anything. This season seems a tad lacking for me this time around, given that there’s a lot of sequels to shows I haven’t watched or stuff I’m generally just not interested in. However, what I am looking forward to, looks fantastic, so there’s still plenty for me to sink my teeth into this season.
As always, stay tuned for some First Impressions posts for any of the shows I decide to write about in the next few days as well as an overall First Impressions post once the season is fully underway.
What are your pre-airing impressions for the upcoming season? Are there any shows you’re particularly excited for? Let me know in the comments!
