A Silent Voice made me realise how much my taste in Anime has changed for the better

A Silent Voice is a pretty fantastic movie.

It’s an incredibly feelsy story that plays with the audiences emotions in the most brilliant ways possible while also exploring many relatable subjects that draw on those emotions.

It’s one of the greatest Anime movies I’ve seen in recent memory and I enjoyed the entire ride from start to finish.

So yes. You should go watch A Silent Voice if you haven’t already. It’s worth the 2 hours.

But other than being great, A Silent Voice did something I never thought it would be able to do. It helped me realise just how much my tastes have changed and broadened over the years.

Throughout the many years I’ve been an Anime fan I’ve never really cared for Kyoto Animation. I’d go as far as saying I even disliked them. Everyone has always seemed to be completely in love with their work, but I never really was. Almost every show I gave a shot I either found completely boring or just barely reaching the realm of “decent”, with Beyond the Boundary being the closest thing to “good”, in my opinion, that I’d seen from them. I’ve also never really cared for the aesthetic they tend to go for, but that’s also mostly been due to my own stupid preferences that nobody else really has.

I guess it also doesn’t help that they produced what I consider to be the worst Anime I’ve ever seen, Free! Iwatobi Swim Club. God I hate that show. It’s so boring.

Sorry Free! fans… I just don’t get it

I honestly wasn’t expecting to like A Silent Voice all that much. But I wound up enjoying it a lot. I even dug the aesthetic of the movie. In the end, I gave it a 9/10, making it the first Kyoto Animation production that I’ve rated above a 6.

Which then begged the question: “Is it just an exception that proves the rule?”

Needing answers, I immediately fired up another Kyoto Animation production I’d never seen before: Chuunibyo. I’m yet to finish it, but it’s been great so far and I’m really enjoying it. And like A Silent Voice, I’m even enjoying the aesthetic, despite it being that very same KyoAni aesthetic that I’ve been known to dislike.

But I never saw Chuunibyou before. So what if it’s just another exception.

So, I then went back and watched a handful of episodes from a few other Kyoto Animation shows I’d seen in the past and originally given low scores to, and in pretty much every case I found myself having a lot more fun than I did before, and even opened my heart up to that moe aesthetic. Except Free! because that’s still the most boring and bland thing I’ve ever seen.

But my point here is, my taste has changed dramatically in the last year or so. I used to be fairly vocal about my distaste for Kyoto Animations works, and yet here I am today praising them for a movie and a handful of series that I would never have seen myself enjoying a couple of years ago.

Those were dark days

There was a time where I would always look the other way when presented with a relaxing, cute, high school series with a moe aesthetic and consider such a thing to be the most boring thing imaginable. But today, if I’m in the mood, such a show, or movie, can be one of the most pleasant experiences I could ask for.

I guess being an adult with a full time job and a mountain of responsibility on my shoulders has helped birth a means to appreciate the relaxing, chilled out nature of a series like Hyoka or the mature message of a movie in the vein of A Silent Voice.

So, I guess I like Kyoto Animation now. Or I’m at least more open minded towards their work. I look forward to giving many of their shows a second chance.

I guess sometimes people do change.

It’s amazing what a single movie can do.

  1. Oh god, your post reminds me of my really really like “who wrote this – a drunk blind panda bear after being spun in an office chair 60 times?” early days of reviewing years ago. A few months ago, I went back and read some of them and I was astounded at how overly harsh and overly kind I was to series that, looking back, I would give a much different opinion of today. I had some opinions that literally amounted to “This show’s pretty good, but dear god I hate this one character so much for very petty reasons that I’m going to dock it off 5 points because of it. 1 out 10.”

I’ve also noticed how my opinions have changed on some production companies like Pierrot and Studio Deen. I’m not singing their praises or anything, but I have gained more respect for them than I would’ve had in the past. Hell, I’ve even grown to somewhat respect 4Kids more over time, which is odd considering one of my wheelhouses is picking apart their dub work.

It’s always nice to gain that clarity that your opinions and thoughts on certain things have changed, whether for the better or worse. I think it shows your growth as a person and helps you see many other aspects of life with a wider view. Thanks for sharing. 🙂

    1. Oh wow, you’re the same huh? I’m sure I’d get a kick out of reading my old reviews as well, I was so overly harsh and critical for no petty reasons haha.

I’m the same, naturally. Kyoto Animation being my own example, as well as Deen who I’ve also began to find a lot more appealing recently.

It’s definitely a great thing to realise. Change is most often a good thing, and we should embrace it!

Thank you for reading! I’m glad you enjoyed the post and was able to relate to it!

  2. I kind of feel the same way about sport anime. I never used to touch them and then I watched one and found it surprsingly not boring and dull so now I’m going back and watching all the sport anime people used to tell me were good but I wouldn’t try.
Then again, I know my tastes in general are changing. As much as I still love Bleach and Soul Eater and the crazy over the top action of anime I watched early on as a fan, my favourite anime over the past few seasons kind of show I am preferring more thoughtful stories than spectacle these days. Not that I don’t still love a good bit of spectacle given my current fascination with My Hero Academia.
Thanks for sharing such a thoughtful post.
Coincidentally, I have a review of Chuunibyou coming up in a couple of weeks. I always loved that anime and realised I hadn’t gotten around to reviewing it. I still have to rewatch season 2 before I can review that part though.

    1. Sports is definitely another genre I’ve seen myself opening up to recently with Yuri!!! On Ice and Haikyuu being recent examples.

Interesting, I guess I’m not alone here. I feel the same way. There’s a lot of days I just feel like watching something more atmospheric and chilled out than action focused.

And oh, interesting! I’ll be keeping an eye out for that then. Looking forward to seeing your thoughts on the series!

      Thanks for reading!

  3. I’ve heard good things about A Silent Voice. It sounds really interesting. But where’d you find it? I’m curious now.
And this was a very interesting post that reflects how (I think) everyone feels at some point. Like, I look back on tings I used to really like or really dislike, and find that my opinion has changed a lot. I typically think, “Why’d I like this so much?” or “Why’d I hate this so much?” I think that’s simply how people are; as we change, so do our tastes in fiction.

    1. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to find it through legal means and downloaded it via torrents. The movie never came to my city, so I had no way to watch it otherwise.

That being said, I’ll be getting the Blu-Ray on release to support the work, since I enjoyed it a lot.

I’m glad I’m not alone in my changing of tastes and that my post could be relatable to you.

      Thanks for reading!

  4. About a year ago now, pretty much around the time when my blog started, I had all but stopped watching anime. (Yes I know, imagine the horror of that lol😂). But after a while when I started following animeblogs, I got really hooked on it again. And I have gotten in touch with so many diverse genres that I would probably have never discovered on my own. I used to only watch sci-fi anime with big robots and spaceships and stuff like that. It’s not that I don’t watch them anymore, but it’s not the only thing that I enjoy these days. I highly enjoyed Yuri on Ice quite recently. Your Lie in april has so far been the best anime series that I have ever seen. And I might even start watching sports anime after a review on D’s blog for Kuroko’s basketball. So yeah, I definitely know the feeling of changing tastes. I have unfortunately not been able to see this film yet (it’s not available here), but I have heard a lot of great things about it. I am really looking forward to seeing it when I manage to get it from somewhere.
This was another great post as always 😊

    1. I was the same! I always went for sci-fi and robots or battle shounen stuff, and I still watch that stuff of course, and it remains my favourite, but now I like all the other stuff too.

I really enjoyed Yuri!!! On Ice myself, despite not thinking I would have before watching it and I’ve also been wanting to check out Kuroko’s Basketball as well!

It’s a really great movie, you should definitely give it a shot when you manage to find a source for it!

      Thanks for reading!

    1. It’s a very great movie and I strongly recommend it!

And yeah, it’s unfortunate D: I’m planning on going through all of KyoAni’s library of titles though, so perhaps I’ll give it another shot when I get round to it. Maybe I’ll like it more this time around!
