Pre-Airing Impressions: Spring 2017 Anime Season

The Winter 2017 Anime Season has finally come to a close, and Spring has sprung. And with Spring in full swing, yet another season of promising, and not so promising, shows are on the way.

So once again, here are my pre-airing impressions for the upcoming Anime Season! Enjoy!

Attack on Titan Season 2 – After almost 4 years the worldwide phenomenon that is Attack on Titan is finally getting a long awaited and much deserved second season. I’ve already read the Manga material that this second season is likely going to cover, but I am definitely excited for this one. The first season was a spectacular show, and the second season is guaranteed to be just as much fun. However, due to the very different direction that the Manga takes in its later parts in the story, I actually don’t see this second season being as big a hit with many of those who fell in love with the original series. As big Attack on Titan fans, my girlfriend and I are looking forward to marathoning this one when it’s over.

My Hero Academia Season 2 – I love Shounen Jump Manga adaptations, and I loved the first season of My Hero Academia, so this one is likely going to be amazing, especially if it’s going to be two cours as the rumours suggest. After being slightly disappointed with Pierrot’s adaptation of elDLIVE, I could use a quality Shounen Jump adaptation to lift my spirits. My Hero Academia Season 2 is guaranteed to do just that. Oh, and more Tomura please.

Is It Wrong To Try To Pick Up Girls In A Dungeon: Sword Oratoria – This is a spin-off of one of my favourite Light Novel adaptations, so I’m looking forward to this one. Hopefully we’ll get a second season announced at the end of this too. Unfortunately, it’s only available on Anime Strike. Fortunately torrenting is a thing.

Boruto: Next Generation – I haven’t finished the Naruto Anime yet, and I probably won’t be finishing it any time soon. That being said, I’m sure Boruto will help fill the gaping hole that Naruto’s absence has left in the hearts of many, and I’m sure it will continue to run for many, many years to come.

Saekano: How to Raise a Boring Girlfriend Flat – I didn’t watch the first season of Saekano, but I’m happy to see this with a second season. I look forward to getting around to this and the first season some day.

Rage of Bahamut: Virgin Soul – Yet another long awaited sequel, after 3 years, we’re finally getting a second season of Rage of Bahamut. While the first season wasn’t particularly amazing, it had some really great moments and fantastic action scenes. Here’s hoping we get more of that charm with Virgin Soul. Also, that new main character design ❤

Eromanga-sensei – This is an adaptation of a Light Novel written by the same guy who wrote Oreimo. Oreimo had incest. This will also probably have incest. This will likely be a less creepy, and equally incestuous version of Oreimo. I’m not sure how I feel about that, but I’ll watch it anyway.

Grimoire of Zero – Hey look, it’s a White Fox show. And it has “Zero” in the title. Re:Zero season 2? No, but as a fan of White Fox and everything they do, I’ll be checking this one out. No idea how this’ll turn out.

Akashic Records of Bastard Magic Instructor – Another magical high school Light Novel adaptation. However, as someone who has read the source material, I can guarantee that there’s more to this one than you might think. It’s got an identity of its own, despite appearances and it’s pretty damn good. I’m looking forward to this adaptation.

Clockwork Planet – There’s a lot of hype for this one but I’m not too excited for some reason. The aesthetic and concept seem interesting though! Will definitely check this one out.

Renai Bouken – This is Death Note only instead of a notebook that kills people, it’s a notebook that makes people fall in love with one another. There’s even angels of love instead of gods of death. I’m sold. This could be hilarious.

Berserk (2017) – The Berserk Manga is the greatest dark fantasy story of all time as well as one of the finest things to ever come from the medium. While this adaptation has been a bit of a letdown due to the CGI art style, the storytelling has remained fantastic and I look forward to seeing more of Miura’s crazy world come to life. The CGI may be awful, but more Berserk Anime is better than no Berserk Anime.

Sakurada Reset – Since their debut, every single show by David Production has been outstanding. From Level E to Jojo, they’re an extremely talented group of individuals. This one has an interesting concept and fans of the source material have assured me that it’s full of unique ideas with a fantastic narrative. This show seems right up my alley and it’ll likely be the best show of the season, as well as the one that’ll be flying under many peoples radars. Take my advice and keep your eyes on this one. Trust me.

Re:Creators – We’ve had Re:Zero, Rewrite, Re:LIFE and now we have Re:Creators! When will this constant stream of e-mail reply adaptations end? …I don’t care for this one.

Sin: Nanatsu no Taizai – Not to be confused with the pretty great Shounen Manga adaptation, Nanatsu no Taizai, this show is yet another Ecchi series with a weird focus, this time on personified female versions of the Seven Deadly Sins. Whatever floats your boat Ecchi fans…

Armed Girls Machiavellism – Despite how goofy the premise of this one sounds, if it has some cool action scenes and quality humour, I can get behind this.

Natsume Yuujinchou Roku – Another season of Natsume Yuujinchou? I still haven’t seen any of the previous seasons so I’ll be skipping this one for now. It amazes me that this show continues to get more seasons. I look forward to getting round to them all one day.

Sakura Quest – This looks like yet another successor to Shirobako, focusing on yet another real world industry, this time the Tourism industry. I loved Shirobako. I loved it a lot. If this is similar in its approach, I’ll love this one!

Shuumatsu Nani Shitemasu ka? Isogashii desu ka? Sukutte Moratte Ii desu ka? – Beasts, Leprechauns and Ancient Weapons? Count me in!

Anonymous Noise – Another Anime that supposedly focuses on a group of friends playing music. Perhaps this time we’ll get something that’s less Fuuka and more Kids on the Slope. That’d be great. Looking forward to this one.

Alice & Zouroku – Yet another Usagi Drop, Sweetness and Lightning and Poco’s Udon World styled show. I’m sure this’ll be great for those who love this kind of stuff. I’ll likely pass for now.

The Eccentric Family Season 2 – I never watched the first season of this show, but I probably should considering the positive buzz and interesting concept. I’m sure this’ll be a lot of fun.

Tsuki ga Kirei – This one seems like it’ll be a nice, mature romance story. As a fan of nice, mature romance stories, I’ll likely enjoy this.

Kado: The Right Answer – I have no idea what this is about, but it’s by Toei which means people are going to have no expectations before it even airs. I will remain positive until it proves otherwise.

Tsugumomo – Standard Ecchi. ‘Nuff said.

Gin no Guardian – Yet another Chinese source material adaptation. Considering how mediocre all of these adaptations have been so far, I have no doubt this one will continue the trend. But perhaps it’ll break the cycle!

Quan Zi Gao Shou – See above.

Hinako Note – Just when I thought Anime had ran out of ideas for things cute girls can do, this show happens. Cute girls being cute scarecrows. This sounds hilarious.

Souryo to Majiwaru Shikiyoku no Yoru ni… – The synopsis for this reads like that of your average Hentai. Oh dear.

The Royal Tutor – This one is pretty interesting solely because of how unique the concept is. A comedy about a royal tutor, tutoring four princes? Sounds like fun.

Kyoukai no Rinne – I’m genuinely surprised that Rinne keeps getting more and more seasons, considering nobody ever talks about it. Ever. I’ve never been big on the series, but I’ll get around to it eventually.

Atom: The Beginning – I’m surprised nobody’s paying much attention to this one. It’s the origin story to freaking Astro Boy! Be excited people! This’ll be great!

Yu-Gi-Oh VRAINS – Yu-Gi-Oh meets Virtual Reality in yet another spin-off that doesn’t feature the title character of the franchise. I stopped watching these after ZEXEL killed what was left of the games balance with its ridiculously broken XYZ rules. Never again.

Starmyu Season 2 – The second season to Starmyu, a show I didn’t watch and know nothing about!

Cinderella Girls Gekijou – No synopsis. Looks cute.

Room Mate: One Side Room M – One Room was the best show of last season, and I’m sure this will be yet another masterpiece of storytelling. But seriously, One Room was terrible and creepy, and this seems like it’ll be the exact same idea, only with hot, muscly men instead of “cute girls that are your sister and her friends”. Fair enough.

Frame Arms Girl – This is a show based on model kits. What an idea, Japan.

Sekai no Yami Zukan – Another “omnibus of creepy short stories” series. This’ll be good fun as always.

Kaitou Senshi Twin Angel – Just make Index Season 3 already J.C Staff.

Love Kome: We Love Rice – Cute rice becomes cute boys. Seriously. This is a show with anthropomorphised rice! HELP.

Beyblade Burst God – Just like Yu-Gi-Oh, it seems Beyblade is still continuing to get many unnecessary spin-offs/seasons. No thanks.

Duel Masters (2017) – Oh for [expletive] sake. Duel Masters is back too?

Future Card Buddyfight Vanguard – That’s it. I’m done.

Mobile Suit Gundam: Twilight Axis – Maybe not. This’ll be amazing because Gundam!

And that’s all everyone! We’ve got a good chunk of much awaited second seasons and a whole lot of promising looking shows. It looks like we’ve got a pretty great season ahead of us!

Stay tuned for my First Impressions posts in the coming days!

  1. Whew, this is intensive!

“The CGI may be awful, but more Berserk Anime is better than no Berserk Anime.”

I definitely agree with that sentiment. As someone who hasn’t read the Berserk manga it at least will give me an idea of the story. It’s a manga I do plan to read one day but the CG adaptation makes for a quick fix, and the first season did get better as it went.

    1. Yeah, I have a bit of a headache after reading all those bloody premises haha. But it was fun!

I’d definitely recommend the Manga at some point. It’s really, really great and far better than the Anime (old and new). It’s just a shame it keeps going on hiatus.

Hopefully this new season won’t disappoint!

  2. looking forward to trying out a lot of new shows in this coming season. i picked way too many sequels in the winter, so it should be fun to be more blind.

im with you on attack on titan. really enjoyed the first season, but im not totally sold on where the manga goes after that.

    1. Yeah, I’ll be aiming to check out less sequels myself this season.

It definitely becomes more “Attack on Politics” this season, but I really enjoyed the change in focus. It makes things feel less like “dumb action” and feel like it there’s more of a central narrative.

  3. Woah, what an assessment! I’ll definitely be looking forward to Sakurada Reset and Re:Creators this season, so I hope they do well. >.< Then there are the giants like more AoT and MHA that I'm sure will do just fine. Lastly, I'll look into more Bahamut (YASSS) and the sequel to the Eccentric Family after I've watch the first!

  4. Whoa, did not know there would be so many new shows coming out. I think I am going to call in sick for about a year or something in order to watch all these 😂 As for the thing I am looking forward to the most: no question Attack on Titan season 2 😊
