Lethargic Ramble: Why I never “drop” Anime

tanaka_kun_itsumo_kedaruge_01_2

Today, I want to talk about the practice of “dropping” Anime, or more about myself dropping Anime.

When most people are watching a series that they aren’t enjoying, or that they don’t like, they tend to back out and drop it. They take it to side, they tuck it away into the box of dropped shows and they never take it out of that box. It stays there forever, locked away, never to cause them misery again.

And this practice makes perfect sense. If you aren’t enjoy something, why continue with it? Why would you put yourself through the insufferable hell of watching something that you get nothing out of just for the sake of “finishing” it?

Well, this is kind of funny, but if any of you take a look at my MyAnimeList, you’ll no doubt notice something peculiar. No, it isn’t that Sword Art Online has an 8/10. What’ peculiar is that I have no Dropped shows on my list. That’s because I don’t drop shows. Ever. I’ll admit, my MyAnimeList list is horrendously incomplete and there’s over 100 shows missing from there that I can’t be bothered adding due to laziness, but I can guarantee, with certainty that I haven’t dropped a single one of them.

do “stall” shows, which means I put it to the side for the time being, but when I do so I do it with the intention of returning to it at some point in the future. I normally do this with shows that have over 100 episodes or multiple seasons. That being said, I’ve only stalled around 20 something shows, all of which were fairly recent with the one on there the longest being there for around a year and a half.

Now, I’m not against the practice of dropping shows. In fact, I think it’s the best thing you can possibly do if you aren’t enjoying something. It’s a smart thing to do. It’s something I should probably do as well. So why don’t I?

Well, the answer is simpler than you think.

First of all, I’m a completionist. In every part of my life, I have this obsessive tendency to complete everything I start. If I start hoovering, I can’t stop with half the rooms in the house done. If I’m playing a video game, I have to collect everything or get every achievement or trophy or whatever “100%” is. And if I watch an Anime, I absolutely have to get to the end. I have to see every episode, every special, every OVA, every movie and whatever else watchable the series has to offer.

It’s a little sad, maybe even a little depressing, but it’s just how I am. Even if I absolutely despise a show, I need to see it through, because there will always be that nagging feeling of “what happens at the end?” or “how did they resolve that story?”

tanaka-kun-11-15
It’s unhealthy…

But beyond my weird, obsessive, completionist deficiency, I also believe that every show has some redeeming quality that’s worth experiencing. No matter how much I dislike a show or aren’t having a good time, I believe there’s some good in there, if even a little. And I want to see that good. I want to experience it and maybe even have the chance to occasionally look back on that horrible show and think about that one good thing that happened and that made me feel something, even if it was for the briefest of moments and amongst a load of unenjoyable rubbish.

I also believe that there’s a chance for every show to “get better” down the line. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a firm believer that a show should be entertaining or “good” from the very first episode, and if I were any normal person, I’d most definitely drop a show for not being so after 1 or 2 episodes.

But we’ve already established I’m a bit odd. I want to see if a show gets better, even if I know that’s not an excuse any show should have. What’s interesting about this though, is that 9 out of 10 times, this never works in my favour. Most shows I hope will get “better” either don’t get better at all or do the unthinkable and get worse. Shows like Divine Gate remained mediocre the whole way through and Free! Iwatobi Swim Club wound up earning the dishonour of becoming my least favourite and lowest rated Anime series of all time.

*internal screaming*

That being said, there have been times this mindset has worked in my favour as well. Some of my favourite shows of all time wouldn’t be my favourite shows if I’d given up early by dropping them and not continuing to see them through to the end. Katekyo Hitman Reborn! is one of my favourite shows of all time. It’s in my Top 9, it’s been rated a 10 on my MyAnimeList and it’s a show that I think about almost every day. The funniest thing is, I wasn’t very keen on the first few episodes. In fact, I strongly disliked the majority of the first story arc. It was 19 episodes long, it was slow and it was fairly boring and uninteresting. But I persevered and I kept watching, and once I got to the second story arc, I fell in love with the show and by around episode 30 it quickly soared from a 3/10 to a 10/10 and became my 7th favourite Anime series.

*positive memories intensify*

Of course, not every show is going to end up sharing a similar fate, but every time I’m watching a show I don’t enjoy, I can’t help but give in to the nagging feeling that maybe this “bad” show will become the next Hitman Reborn! and turn out to be something amazing by the end.

Finally, I guess it’s also because I’m an incredibly tolerable person. I can tolerate just about anything. In a weird way, I also just kind of love testing my sanity by watching some really awful stuff. I’m sure I’ll find the Anime that will completely break me one day. I don’t look forward to that day.

Now, I’m not telling you to not drop shows. By all means, keep dropping shows. It’s a healthy thing to do and it’s something I really should do. I wish I could. But I can’t, for the silliest reasons ever. Help.

Help.

So yeah, that’s why I don’t drop shows. I doubt none of you even noticed and I know this isn’t the most interesting topic, but I thought this would be fun to share with you all.

Now, if you’d like to test my sanity, feel free to recommend the most droppable shows possible and we’ll see if you can break my “no drop” attitude. I’d be up for that challenge.

tanaka-kun-01
I accept your challenge…

Thanks for reading folks.

  1. Ten years ago I finished every anime I started. Limited access ensured that there weren’t enough other shows that I could watch instead. I then went through a weird transitional phase where I’d commit to finishing things regardless. Now I try not to drop after episode three but as this season is proving, with a hectic watch schedule I just have no desire to continue boring shows. Bad, I’ll stick out but boring I’ve decided that my time is worth more than that.
I am however still a comoletionist at computer games which is why I don’t play many and why it takes me years to ‘finish’ a game.
It is interesting to see why some people drop or don’t drop shows. Thanks for sharing.

    1. Due to limited access, it was certainly a lot easier to keep my commitment to not dropping stuff. Nowadays with the great abundance of shows and a busier schedule than the average person, it’s definitely harder, but I soldier on I guess!

I definitely see where you’re coming from though. I’m just an insane person 😛

It definitely affects my video game playing a lot too. I’m still playing Disgaea: Hour of Darkness on PS2 regularly with 1000+ hours clocked by trying to “get everything” in a seemingly endless game. I barely get any games played as a result.

      Thanks for reading! 😀

    1. I see where you’re coming from there. Although I stall shows, I admit it’s often hard to get back into some of them, particularly for longer series where I end up forgetting half the stuff that happened.

It’s why I haven’t picked Fairy Tail back up since last Summer.

    a) Your writing style makes me smile, Leth. 🙂 As always, wonderful post. 🙂 Some people are like that; they just don't drop shows. I've dropped a few, or at least put them on hold like you were mentioning. Most I have returned to pick up, though, at least in pieces. The best shows, in my opinion, are those that don't tempt you to skip around.

    b) I am struggling to find your MAL (probably due to my own folly) and so I don't know if you've seen this show, buttt~~~~

A show you might be willing to drop? Challenge accepted. What about the dub of "Diabolik Lovers," picking up the sub at season 2 (or waiting for the dub March 2017)?

  3. I thought that I was the only one who never drops shows, but I guess after reading this, I now know I am not the only one. I have the same, I can’t drop shows either, but like you I do “stall” some series.
The thing is, I have so far seen a few series that started off really bad, but ended up redeeming themselves in later episodes. One of those shows was Coppelion. It started off pretty mediocre, but the second half of the series was just incredible. Supposedly that is also something that should ring true for Steins Gate. I have just reached episode 12 for that show, abd can honestly say that I am not enjoying it. But I hear that this series should also get much better in the second half, the point I have now reached (here is keeping my fingers crossed lol).
That said, as have never dropped a series either. Once I have started something I want to know how it ends. I have already invested time in it, so I also want to complete it. This was a great read, nice to see that there are more likeminded people out there 😊

    1. Wow! I’m not alone! It’s nice to know there’s someone else out there who doesn’t drop shows. That’s really awesome!

Coppelion huh? I’ll need to check it out, it sounds very interesting 😛

Your situation with Coppelion is pretty much why I never drop shows. I feel every show has the potential to be a Coppelion and really be something great by the end. And like you and Steins;Gate, often a shows reputation keeps me watching as well, since I want to see what the “deal” is.

I’m glad you enjoyed the post and have found me to be likeminded! Thanks for reading!

  4. Great post. It’s only recently I’ve started dropping shows. Earlier my situation was pretty similar to yours. Even I used to have the tendency to complete every show I started but recently quite the opposite of that has been happening to me.
    This was an awesome post!

  5. First off, 8/10 for SAO? Shame on you! XD

Second, I myself have been guilty of not dropping a show that’s not entertaining out of morbid curiosity of just how bad it can get. I guess it just depends on the anime.

I do, however, have an anime in mind that even You won’t finish: Eiken

I await your return from Ross dark abyss. *Maniacal laugh.*

    1. I know, it should obviously be a 10 right? Or is it a 1? 😛

I’m glad I’m not alone there then, although I do it for literally everything… It’s unhealthy haha.

Eiken huh? Guess I’ll give it a spin! I’ll be sure to do a post on it when I’m done.

  6. This is a really interesting mindset towards watching shows, especially because I and I’d wager most in the community heavily practice dropping. I’m sure there is *at least* one series I’ve dropped that might have become a favorite in some capacity if I kept with it. I don’t have the strength to sit through those 9/10 that I don’t enjoy, though.

And I hope you never pick up One Piece since you’ll be watching that for eternity. :p

    1. I myself found it interesting as well, since I’m well aware I’m in the minority here. I definitely feel that’s probably true, but I’ll tell you that it’s honestly not worth sitting through 9/10 things you won’t enjoy at all. Don’t be crazy like me 😛

And funny you say that, One Piece is one of the 20 something Stalled shows on my list. I’m currently at 300 and something, but I lost my flow with it a while back. I’ll probably pick it up sometime again, but I’m in no rush for obvious reasons 😛

      1. See, I end up not even bothering with One Piece and the like because I know they’re way too long for me to finish and my problem is that I don’t like starting something new when I’m in the middle of another series. I do want to get to things like Gintama one day though.

        Liked by 1 person

        1. Yeah, I agree, that’s why I’ve been mostly watching shorter shows these days. I tend to only watch one show at a time (barring my weekly watches).

If you haven’t seen it yet, I’d recommend Hunter x Hunter (2011) along with Gintama. It’s 148 episodes, but it ends pretty conclusively and it’s really great (my favourite show too!)

  7. I hope you never end up stumbling across that anime that’d break you. That’d be sad 😀

This was an interesting read. I used to watch shows all the way through but as Karandi said, increased accessibility and an inflated watchlist means that I’m much more likely to drop something. I try to avoid it as much as possible by going after shows that are likely to suit my taste but even so, there are some rotten eggs.

I’ve also felt that I wasted my time after finishing a show so I can only imagine some of the grief your completionist tendencies cause you. Hang in there!

    1. Insanely late reply (sorry!):

I kind of want to test my limits because I’m insane, but at the same time I really hope that doesn’t happen because as you said: that’d be sad!

I can definitely understand why people drop shows. To be honest, I should be doing the same considering how little time I have these days to watch Anime. But I’m… Weird 😛

Thanks for reading and your comment! Glad you enjoyed the post!

  8. I don’t particularly like to drop anime think so far in my whole time of watching have dropped 10 out of those some od them I need to revisit and give chance. Something I am watching and I’m not into it or not in the mood I’ll put aside to watch for later on. I believe there is good in every anime somewhere but I guess there are those acceptions. Great post !!!

  9. How do you read manga then? What happens when you start reading something that’s not fully translated / available and you can’t read the rest, because it’s an old one that’s discontinued? (I get the feeling you don’t run into this problem, so what would you do then, hypothetically?)

I can understand this mindset, because I used to have it myself (not to the same obsessive degree, but fairly close – I had a much higher tolerance for stuff back in the day, so I could consume just about anything and be content). But re-evaluating my life in terms of time, value, productivity and the giant list of things I want to do outside of watching anime / reading manga has been a revolution for me. I wouldn’t have started up my blog a couple months ago if it weren’t for this change (probably). I know I won’t be able to fully experience everything I on my many lists (movies, tv shows, anime, cartoons, games, books, comic books, manga, etc.), so I had to devise a system to make sure I wasn’t wasting time on stuff that wasn’t good (didn’t improve my mood or understanding of anything, and either felt boring or painful to sit through), in order to get to the stuff I REALLY want / need to experience (i.e. reading great books should ideally help with my writing and comprehension).

I won’t torment you with any appalling recommendations (for now), since I’ve been in your position and felt your pain before. It’s super stressful having so many things being piled on to “to-do lists”, that you need to train yourself and try and adopt a different mindset of looking at and dealing with things (vague advice is vague, sorry – you’re not me, so I doubt the same approach will work for you as it did for me, but I gave my two cents anyway).

Interesting read. Thanks for the insight.
