30 Anime Challenge #6 – Anime I want to see but haven’t yet

Before we get started I’d like to address the big issue first: I haven’t made a post in 5 days and I haven’t really been keeping up to date with the blogging community this week.

I’d like to apologise for that, since I normally post every day or two and I tend to read everyone’s stuff, give feedback and chat away throughout the week.

Unfortunately this week has been incredibly hectic. Work has been hectic, I’ve been incredibly busy after work hours and I’ve been even more lethargic than usual. Even now, as I type this, I feel like drifting off to dream land.

Me all week

But starting with this post, everything should be back to normal. I’ll be posting regularly again, almost every day of the week, and I’ll be actively involving myself in the blogosphere again.

To make up for being away, I’ll also try to squeeze in an extra post here and there where possible. Sorry for the absence!

I’d also like to apologise for the length of this post, since it’s pretty short compared to the usual. I don’t have much to say on this particular part of the challenge! So sorry for that as well!

Now that I’ve gotten the apologies out of the way, let’s move on to what really matters. This post!

What’s the Anime I’ve most wanted to watch but haven’t?

Well…

Ergo Proxy

6259

I have never seen Ergo Proxy. I’ve been told it’s amazing. I’ve been told it’s one of the best Anime ever made. I’ve been recommended it more times than I can count and I’ve heard almost nothing but good things about the series.

I’ve read up on the series (without spoiling it), I’ve read countless reviews written by people who’s opinions I trust and I’ve even watched several trailers to get a feel for the series, yet I seem to have done everything possible to avoid actually watching the show for some reason.

And I don’t really know why. I’ve always wanted to watch the show, it seems pretty cool, it seems like something I’d really enjoy and looks like one of those thematically deep shows I could really sink my analytical teeth into. So why haven’t I watched it?

I guess it’s mostly to do with the fact that I honestly have no idea what I’m getting into. I’ve read countless spoiler free reviews and analysis posts about Ergo Proxy, and not one of them have really done anything to explain why it’s good or why I should watch it beyond “it’s really good and you should watch it”.

Yeah, yeah. I know this sounds ridiculous. I know I should just watch something if I want to watch it, but I feel like Ergo Proxy is a show I should appreciate and that to do so, I need to be in the mood to watch it and I need to dive into it with the correct mindset and have a firm understanding of what I’m getting myself into.

Unfortunately I’m yet to end up in that required mood, and I feel that until I do, I’ll never be able to watch Ergo Proxy and enjoy it to the fullest.

So it’s been on my to watch list since 2008, and it will most likely be there for who knows how long.

That’s all there is to it.

It’s a ridiculous reason, but perhaps I’ll get round to it. Someday. I really hope so…

What Anime have you always wanted to watch but haven’t yet?

  1. I guess I’m a minority this time but Ergo Proxy didn’t affect me very much. The appeal was there mainly because of the setting, the ideas presented and the whole experimental feel. On the other hand, that feel wasn’t always a good one – the show sometimes was disjointed and seemed like the themes and ideas were thrown in just for the sake of it and not because the plot required it. For me Ergo Proxy ended up being more of a brain exercise or a neutral inspection of what anime can do rather than a truly enjoyable show.

  2. Ergo Proxy is a great anime in my opinion, and I’d gladly watch it again. It’s a bit dragging at some parts, and the tone does get a bit too heavy at certain points, but I enjoyed it for what it was. It had plenty of great ideas, good characters, nice setting, story and even decent plot twists. Not sure if I’d put it on that ‘must watch’ pedestal, but it’s still pretty good. Hope you get around to seeing it sometime!

  3. I’m still putting off Hunter X Hunter for the same reason, I just haven’t been in the mood. It keeps sitting on my watch list but I never get around to it and not because I don’t think I’ll enjoy it, I just don’t feel like it when I look at the list or when I’m sitting down to start something. Eventually I will get around to it.
Ergo Proxy didn’t do much for me and I didn’t get very far into it. What I saw of it was well done but I wasn’t really in the mood for that at the time I watched it either. It’s on my list to go back to and give a second chance to at some point in time.

    1. Well, seeing as HxH is my favourite show, I hope you get around to it. It’s a really great show once you get through it all, and if you’re really into dark, thematic stuff, the Chimera Ant arc will be right up your alley.

It’s definitely a series you’ll need to be in the right mood for, especially because it’s pretty lengthy. Those are always the hard ones to dedicate time to. I can’t remember the last time I was in the mood to sit down and watch an arc of One Piece.

I definitely need to get round to Ergo Proxy. Perhaps I’ll give it a shot soon 😛

      Thanks for reading!

  4. We all have those busy weeks. Don’t worry about it too much 🙂

It makes sense that you can’t find a lot of spoiler free details about why Ergo Proxy is amazing because a lot of the really interesting stuff is spoiler heavy. I recently finished it but I’m 6 reviews away from that (you can check out my progress post), so maybe a month or so before I attempt a spoiler free review?

Everything said by the others here is accurate in some way. It’s very deep and really intelligent in some ways, but it feels very disjointed sometimes too. I can easily see it as one of those polarizing series where you either really like it or just can’t get into what it’s trying to do. Sorry for another vague description, but I’ll do better if my review.

  5. I’m not gonna lie. I find “Ergo Proxy” dull. The art, animation & character designs are awesome—they’re a treat to the eyes, but I wasn’t really impressed with all that much. But perhaps you’ll like it better than I did…maybe.
